Walking to work

I live on the outskirts of the city and work in the centre. I feel really uneasy walking through the city at the moment. Anyone else? How are you coping with it?

Are you able to articulate why you feel uneasy ?

I'd have thought this has been the BEST time to be walking, in any time in living memory.
Very little traffic, lots of space. Nice and light now the clocks have changed. No groups allowed to hang about together and intimidate people.

There is something unnerving about walking around somewhere that should be packed with people but isn't. I remember that one year when I was living in London and England were in the world cup and made it quite a long way, semis maybe. I went out while they were playing and there was nobody around and it was really, really weird.

I blame films like 28 Days Later, where an empty city is always a sign of something really bad having happened.

No groups allowed to hang about together and intimidate people.

On the other hand, a good chance of no witnesses if you're attacked.

In the past I've felt uneasy in the town centre in the early evening. After the shops are closed but before the nightlife really gets going, so it's a bit quiet but there are still a few people around, and I'm that much more vulnerable because of it.

How about riding a bike?

RonnieBarkingMad · 05/04/2020 00:49

Do you normally drive to and from work?

Optimistic54 · 05/04/2020 05:37

I also walk to and from work and while it was nice having no traffic noise or people around me it was eerie, but it was also lovely to be walking in the sunshine in peace. Walking home in the evening when it's dark I don't like, I always think there's safety in numbers.

I work in a city centre and have to walk at 9pm to the bus stop. It is eerie with no one about, and we have been advised not to walk about on our own, even those who are just walking round the corner from work to the car park (not very practical as no one else gets the bus).

I have been walking into the city centre for my daily exercise and love it. It's so quiet. I tried walking the other direction a few times in woodland trails and to the park and it was really busy. It's so much better to stick to urban areas.

Oh, I remember that. Tesco’s & the huge park next to it were both almost empty, it was great.

I don't have a car or a bike. There are still a few people around- and I feel intimidated by them. I worry that if something happens to me there will be no one else around. We've been told not to wear NHS Id outside the building in case someone tries to take it from us so obviously I don't but I still have to carry my phone, cards etc and I'm scared of getting mugged. It's always a risk I know but I think that the sort of people who would do that are more likely to when there are less witnesses. I know I'm being silly.

Wouldn't worry me. When I have walked into work in the morning - it would have been around 5am so few around then, but not deserted. I could walk about now but too lazy- plus want to make use of my free (pre-freedom pass) oystercard!!!
