Dental prices

Wandering if anyone knows the answer to this.
My tooth has broken in half. Inside exposed. Quite badly decayed. If it is possible to save it with a crown would the price of the crown include the root canal or would it be a root canal plus the crown. If it is two separate prices then I will need to get it extracted. If the two are merged together then I might be able to save enough to have it done. It's a premolar. Don't want to lose it unless it's a sky high price

Tia

NHS or private? NHS is about £300 for root canal and a crown. Private has no limit but I'd expect it to be about £1k-£1500. It might not be possible to do that treatment so could need extracting.

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 17:58

Private! Oh my goodness really!? I will have the bloody thing out then. How much do you think an extraction would cost?

Privately. Prob a couple of hundred.

Blush my god. Ok best start saving now for the extraction.. I might have enough by the time lock down is over

Have you not got a dentist? Why not look for an NHS one? They do exist!

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 18:45

I do have one. They are both. On NHS they wanted to pull 7 teeth if I went private he was going to save them. Starting with the ones that hurt. I have had 2 root canals and filled them. One has a temporary filling in was due to have it filled properly but then covid happened and then my tooth broke. I wanted this one done first as I knew it was worse but he wanted to do all my lower jaw first so I have waited 6 months to only have 2 root canals done and still need two more done at the bottom then he was going to do the same for this broken one but we obviously waited too long.

If I revert to NHS he will remove them all. I'm only 28 I don't want to lose them all. I had sever hypremises during pregnancies and it really took a toll on my teeth

Sounds like you need to start with some prevention.

Mrsmorton · 04/04/2020 19:50

Posted too soon.

To stabilise what you've got. Then gradually progress with the treatment. A crown is usually the last sort of thing you do in a treatment plan. Get rid of all the active issues first.
Good luck

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 19:55

So do you think I should have the tooth removed? It's open and I can see the decay and it hurts. Then I will get the other root canals done

No idea. Only your dentist can tell you. It's always an option though. Sometimes it's better to get rid and focus the money on the teeth that matter.

babycornplease · 04/04/2020 20:02

Not sure if this is helpful, but I had a tooth that had broken in half (got thrown headfirst into a fence by my delightful horse about five years ago), which I ignored until it started to really bloody hurt, terrified of dentists, so eventually got my arse in gear and had an appointment around two months ago, he advised a private crown (they are both an nhs and a private dentist) as the tooth was visible when I smiled, so I paid £550 odd for that to be done...

Got a temporary on now as the permanent crown appointment was due for last week, by which time obviously all the dentists had shut, so just praying that it holds on until they open again...

To be honest, he sold me with the private crown as he said there would be 'less cutting' 😱😱😱

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 20:13

Thanks guys.

Baby did you have a root canal too? This is my premolar. You can see it but not too noticeable.

I might try and get a credit card and save it for this

I’ve just had a root and crown on NHS. £269.50! I’ve also had lots of teeth issues post hyperemisis.

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 20:27

Mine refused to fix them on NHS! They said it would take too long for the money. They only have a duty of care to make me healthy not look good and that was 2 sperate NHS. So they said if I want the work then private it is

If this will descend into dentist bashing, I'm out. You asked for advice. You should look up nhs dentistry online. Everything you need to know is there.

Remember that almost all dental disease is preventable.

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 20:33

No I'm not bashing dentists. I appreciate the advice. And no i don't think I could have prevented it to the point I wouldn't have any damage. I didn't even know I had damage as I had no pain and the decay is inside and not showing outside of the tooth.

I have read and taken your advice and will speak to my dentist again when they open again.

babycornplease · 04/04/2020 20:34

No, no root canal! And no dentist bashing!!! He did a great job, I'm really pleased with what has been done so far, just really bad timing about getting the permanent one out on... anyone know how long temp ones should last??

Actually don't tell me that, it will be another thing to worry about!!!

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 20:38

I have a temp filling for about 3 months. Kids were Ill and the dentist was full so there was a wait and then covid happened. It's still in place!

Cool. Some of these threads do and it's exhausting!!

@Bakingbaking it's so case specific. Hopef you can get it done on the nhs but the profession is in absolute turmoil just now dues to poor leadership.

Very happy to take questions by dm if you like.

Crinkle77 · 04/04/2020 20:53

I recently had a tooth out privately and it was £70 which included xray, extraction and antibiotics. He's very good and doesn't over charge. I had a filling last year and as it was only a small one was thirty odd quid which was cheaper than NHS.

Bakingbaking · 04/04/2020 20:54

Oh I understand completely. I was just shocked at the price! But hey go. Could be worse.

Everyone's been hit. We have had to close up so understand the struggle. Hence why I panicked when I saw the price! Grin

I am private now and fair play to him he did both root canals in 20 minutes each. So I was very happy with that. He is an excellent dentist and I had no pain after. Just a bit disappointed that I may lose a tooth. But that's my fault for not being careful enough. Thanks for your help
