Any birdwatchers about? Identifying birdsong.

I heard and saw a bird singing this morning, and can't identify it. Brown and possibly some sort of warbler, singing and then getting a reply from another one further away. It was sitting on a branch in a scrubby ditch by the side of a field, rural home counties. I've been online and listened to a few clips but can't find this one. It went (as best as I can write down!):

Twiddle-dee, twiddle-dee, twiddle-dee, twiddle-dee ........... and again, then a pause while it listened to its friend. Then repeated several times.

Any ideas?

Ooh can I ask for one as well? Lone bird sitting right at the top of a tall tree. Looks about the size of a blackbird, maybe a bit bigger. It's call is a single note "weep weep weep weep", very loud, then it goes quiet and repeats several times before moving to another tree. I'm in Sussex, semi rural with lots of woods and gardens.

Hello, I know nothing beyond recognising robins, black birds and some type of tit!

Joining in asDP and I just had a conversation that bird song seems so much louder and clearer at the moment and we cant identify any of it.

I know there is less traffic but this is from early in the morning when not much traffic anyway.

We are in London, zone three. So many more birds in garden too.

The weep weep could possibly be a jay or if smaller than a blackbird and flying onto the trunk rather than sitting on top of branches perhaps a nuthatch

The twiddle Dee one was it small? All brown?

HennyPenny4 · 04/04/2020 11:06

Weep weep weep weep quite fast - could be a nuthatch.

iklboo · 04/04/2020 11:07

Did it have a speckled chest? If so it could be a mistle thrush (aka throstle).

mummmy2017 · 04/04/2020 11:09

I heard a bird not long ago that sounded like a typewriter.

squashyhat · 04/04/2020 11:09

Good point about nuthatches - we do have them here. It looks a bit big though but I will check it out. Thanks!

squashyhat · 04/04/2020 11:10

The typewriter one could be a mistle thrush, Jay or maybe a magpie.

I strongly recommend the Merlin Bird ID app from Cornell university. It won’t recognise bird song unfortunately but it has uncanny powers to identify birds from photos and will play you samples of each birds’ calls so you can eliminate suspects.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 04/04/2020 11:23

Possibly a skylark ?

thewooster · 04/04/2020 12:11

Was it a robin? They are loud chirpers and respond back to each other.

GuyFawkesDay · 04/04/2020 12:12

There are birdsong apps.

That one sounds like a blue tit call.

GuyFawkesDay · 04/04/2020 12:13

Robins sing a really lovely call, definitely not a robin

willowpatterns · 04/04/2020 12:17

The twiddle dee one wasn't a skylark (or a robin, lol). It was light brown and looked like a warbler, about that size anyway. A little smaller than a starling.
I recognise a lot of birds, but the miscellaneous brown jobs get me every time.

Dunnock?

willowpatterns · 04/04/2020 13:51

At least twice the size of a dunnock.

Try listening to the samples on here

willowpatterns · 04/04/2020 14:15

Thanks sorryiasked I already checked that website. Trouble is, that it was none of the many common usual suspects, all of which I already recognise, which takes me back to square 1.

Aha. Just listened to several different recordings of the reed warbler.

That's the one. Smile

We have loads of fieldfares at the moment, but they're big biffers.
