Now no teaching work, she's been working in old folks home but is still struggling.

Does anyone know what benefits she's entitled too? She has no rent to pay but is struggling with all the basics.

Why wasn’t she furloughed if she was on a long term temp position

permana · 03/04/2020 09:32

She might be able to claim Universal credit to top-up her wage?
Can she increase her hours at the care home?

She was in different schools sometimes everyone day? Not sure.

No she can't. She's got a night shift but nothing for day yet, she covered 1⃣ day

Was she self employed or PAYE so could get government help via employer or HMRC.

Universal Credit is probably the best bet.

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 03/04/2020 11:23

She was paye but zero hours contract so self employed...

If she has no premises she will probably be in the self employed group where the last 3 years tax returns are added together and an average of those 3 years income taken to give an 80% wage by HMRC from June but backdated. Up to a max of £2,500 pcm
She needs to heck.oit her supplybteacher forums for advice that's more specific. I'm.a SE mobile health care professional and my forums have been very useful

Check.out her forums!

Instead of posting on Mumsnet it would have been more helpful to advise her to contact her local Citizens Advice, most are still doing advice by phone and email.

She can still do that but not until Monday now. Meanwhile there are online benefit calculators: Turn2Us and Entitledto.

"She was paye but zero hours contract so self employed"

This is a contradiction.
An agency worker getting paid via PAYE is not self employed.
The zero hours contract is irrelevant, that just means that the work is not guaranteed, but the worker still gets paid via PAYE for the work they do.
She might also be self employed if she does other work that she paid for via invoices and not PAYE. But you didn't mention that.

I don't like advising via a third party as you probably won't know the answers to the questions I need to ask... but your cousin might be entitled to new-style JSA, if she worked and paid NI in 2017-2019. She might also be entitled to Universal Credit (instead of or in addition to nsJSA) but this depends on a few factors. The benefit calculators will help and if still confused after using those she should contact Citizens Advice.

@AnotherEmma

I've been on mumsnet for about 10 years and I've had incredible advice on how to to ask for an ELC and myself rights, to leases and children with SEN etc.

Infact it didn't occur to ask citizen advise however in the past I've never been able to gets through or get help.
Smile

Yes, it's a contradiction but this is the sketchy information I've been givens that she has been given.

I've been very ill these past three days and tried to get some ideas of how to help her because she's running out of money.

Never ever suggest it's nothing worth it asking mumsnet, it usually always is.

I totally agree there is lots of great advice to be shared on mumsnet. Hard via a third party though and you don't always get immediate or accurate answers. However it's better than nothing especially if it's the weekend and you can't through to an organisation like citizens advice. It's true we haven't been able to answer every single call, we do reply to all the emails though (this is at my office, not speaking for them all obviously!)

Sorry to hear you've been ill. Must be tough to be worrying about her situation on top of looking after yourself.

Thanks for a mother Emma, I've passed on the benefits calculators to her
