Car insurance confusion

Sorry to bore everyone with this and I apologise if there’s a area for these kind of things. Anyway, in May 2018 I had a small accident where I went into the side of someone on a roundabout. They were lovely and understandable while we exchanged insurance details etc and I gave them my number, but I didn’t take theirs. I rang my insurance straight away and explained what happened and they told me to sit tight and wait to hear something. A few days later I had a missed call of auxilis (I think that’s what they’re called) so I rang them back and gave my details and they had no record on the system and didn’t know why they phoned me, so I presumed it was a cold call type of thing.
I didn’t hear a thing from them again and they didn’t call or text me so I rang my insurance again, who assured me if they hear anything they will call and if I don’t hear anything in 6 months, the other party must not of claimed through insurance.

Today I tried to renew my car insurance and a claim flagged up for £1,200 with the details of my accident. I wasn’t aware they had claimed and I haven’t paid any excess. I also still have my no claims bonus.

I’m not great with stuff like this but that’s not normal protocol is it?

You don't pay the excess for someone claiming against you, only if you claim.
Ditto with no claims bonus.

They probably should've notified you though but I guess if you'd already given your side then it was a simple at fault claim that they agreed to payout.

@ElfAndSafety1 ah thanks, that makes sense. They were talking about the excess on the phone the first time I rang, so I pressured thats what I needed to play. It must of been if I claimed myself

I used to work in car insurance. It would be highly unusual for them to agree a claim without at any point contacting you, at least to make a statement with your version of events.

Regarding excess, that's only payable against repairs to your own vehicle. Regarding NCB, a fault claim should always impact your no claims, unless you'd paid extra on your policy to have them protected?

@rottiemum88 well I had the initial phone call to my insurance and I had to ring them again to see if there were anymore updates. Apart from that, nothing. I definitely haven’t paid to protect my no claims.
