Help! Cleaners insisting on working

Hi MNers,

We use a small agency for our fortnightly cleaners. We've had the same pair for 3 years and they are fantastic, we really value them and try to show our appreciation often.

When we went into lockdown I messaged them saying no need to clean, I will still pay you. But they turned up! This was last Monday. I told them please no need to clean and tried to give them the money. But they said we want to clean, please go out so we can do it Confused and were adamant. So I took DS out on a long walk.

What shall I do? It feels wrong that they're working in lockdown somehow. I'm not going to lie, I'm glad they cleaned as I'm a key worker and bloody knackered but it doesn't seem right!

What? They can't "insist" on anything, and they should not be coming into your home. End of.

Newforestclub · 02/04/2020 17:04

They can't exactly force entry into your house, just tell them that they can't come in.
I understand that technically they can work, because we can all go to work if it's not possible to work from home, but you get the final say as to who comes into your house, so just say no.

They can't insist! Your home, your rules!

Can’t believe you let them in!!

Iamthewombat · 02/04/2020 17:17

Just don’t let them in! What if they infect you? You’re a key worker. Being a cleaner is a great way to expose yourself and your clients to infection. We’re also paying our cleaners not to come, and they have the sense to comply with the request!

jenganinja · 02/04/2020 17:18

Just say no and don't open the door Confused

FloreanFortescue · 02/04/2020 17:18

WTF??

FloreanFortescue · 02/04/2020 17:18

OP that's not on. They're getting paid so what's their issue?

IceKitten · 02/04/2020 17:21

I expect their issue is that, if this carries on for weeks, their clients (not necessarily OP) are likely to stop paying them even if they do so initially.

LilacTree1 · 02/04/2020 17:21

They can’t insist on entering your home.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/04/2020 17:22

Why on earth did you let them?Confused

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 02/04/2020 17:23

How many households are they “insisting”
on cleaning?!

CottonSock · 02/04/2020 17:27

Umm. I just texted mine and told them to stop. I offered to pay half. Maybe that's tight, but they were happy and expecting nothing. I'm usually generous in paying for holidays and sick though I'm not required too.

msmith501 · 02/04/2020 17:33

I'm not sure what the issue is. You don't want someone who may be infected in your home - so say so and actually mean it. How many other homes are they going into? Are they equally lax about social distancing etc. ? They may be lovely people but right now they need to stay at home - their home, not yours. Can't quite believe you let them in to be honest - too soft.

Cohle · 02/04/2020 17:38

Why on earth did you let them in? Just be firm.

Eckhart · 02/04/2020 17:38

What would you do if the cleaners told you you had to do a handstand?

CatBatCat · 02/04/2020 17:43

Why would you let them do it?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 02/04/2020 17:50

Did you contact the owner? Tell them they are not to come under any circumstances.

HarrySnotter · 02/04/2020 17:52

Don't let them in. This is down to you, do NOT have these people in your home, they could be carrying the virus and leaving it all over your house. I told mine not to come and she hasn't.

Mlou32 · 02/04/2020 18:06

They can't make you leave, you choose to buckle to their pressure and leave. Tell them firmly no next time. If after the 2nd no, they still keep 'insisting', say no, thank you, smile and close the door.

blacksax · 02/04/2020 18:15

If they turn up again then "Go away or I will call the police" should do the trick.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/04/2020 18:20

How lovely of them

Of course you can let them if you need it Thanks

gingerbeerandlemonade · 02/04/2020 18:32

@lauriefairycake of course you shouldn't! You're not supposed to mix households.

Elouera · 02/04/2020 18:38

They sound like the type that would continue working even if they had a fever and/or a cough!!! YOUR home, why did you let them in! If needed, you could have said you were self isolating!

I cant believe you would jeopardise you and your families own health, just to have a vacuumed carpet!

puds11 · 02/04/2020 18:45

Eh? Is this a joke? Say no, close door.

@LaurieFairyCake I hope you’re being sarcastic. None of what they are doing is lovely, it is risky and against guidance.
