I just saw a sparrowhawk take a collared dove in my garden!

Then it took the dove to a sheltered space among the shrubs and is now eating it.

7 magpies and 2 huge crows gathered in the trees and shrubs above. I thought they would mob the hawk, but they just perched there, watching and waiting - and shrieking. None dared to go up against the little sparrowhawk.

Amazing!

Wow!

happysunr1se · 02/04/2020 11:46

Wow! Cool!

I am looking out my living room window more, I feel like maybe the wildlife is becoming a bit less timid recently but I've only got squirrels, robin, blue tit and magpies.

A couple of years ago my husband heard a bang against the window and then saw two hobbies battling each other on the ground below. I was really jealous he got to see that!

We had this a couple of years ago. My husband actually got a few photos but I won't post them as they are a bit gruesome. It was quite astonishing to watch.

My friend gets one occasionally in her garden. Gives her respite from the pigeons for a while!!!

wowfudge · 02/04/2020 12:15

I didn't know they went for things the same size as them. I've been watching a pair of buzzards out of my home office window - we have woodland at the back of our house.

Dilbertian · 02/04/2020 12:16

It's still eating. The magpies and crowd have given up and gone away. Bizarrely, there are doves in the trees and the little birds are back in the air, too. They don't seem to care about the hunter on the ground below them. I suppose they are safe from him or her right now.

Impressive aren't they? The sparrow hawk round here does that, it's impressive to watch - and ticks a home education box too Grin

allmycats · 02/04/2020 12:17

A few years ago one came and took a blackbird in our garden. It killed it, plucked it and started eating it before flying off with the remains. We have it on film. Just lately there has been a sparrow hawk around because there has been the ring of feathers in the back garden . We always know when it has been around because we get fewer birds on the feeders for a couple of days. Gruesome, but it is nature's way.

ShipshapeShore · 02/04/2020 12:20

My DH saw a red kite fly over last week and I'm so jealous! We're in a Midlands town and there have been sightings but they're certainly still rare here.

A pair of little egrets set up home on the local Brook a few years ago. They are a joy to see, although not seen one for ages.

Abraid2 · 02/04/2020 12:22

Red kites are very common where I live and when my dog was a small puppy we were once shadowed by five of them on a walk. A little chilling.

EllaSaturday · 02/04/2020 12:23

Oh I've had one twice in our garden - I don't even know how it fitted in, our garden is tiny! They are amazing, aren't they.

TheDogsMother · 02/04/2020 12:24

We have a lot of kites where I live, also buzzards. Sparrowhawks are amazing, the fighter jets of the sky.

Dilbertian · 02/04/2020 12:25

I've suspected that we have sparrowhawks in the area because we rarely get any small birds at our feeder, though plenty feed within the shrubs. I've also found feathers in the garden before.

I live in an area with a big population of red kites. I've never seen them actually catch any prey though. There have been reports of them getting hungry due to a lack of road kill due to people not using their cars so much recently.

woodencoffeetable · 02/04/2020 12:43

wow, how cool. and you are there to observe as well.

kites eat carrion, I don't think they hunt actively

OlaEliza · 02/04/2020 12:45

There was a colony of parakeets/parrots w/e where I used to live. They were great to see fly past 🐦

HaudMaDug · 02/04/2020 13:44

Everyday sight in my garden are the buzzard family (I call them Buzz and his wife, Babs) who live in the woods next to my house. They sit on the telegraph pole outside my window scanning the lawn ready for my wee partridges to break cover from under the hedge. Next is the big shadow passes over the window as they swoop in for easy pickings.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/04/2020 13:54

Wow!

DP and I once had a hawk of some kind swoop down in front of us and take a blackbird off the pavement, almost at our feet. Amazing but horrible to see.

theseriousmoonlight · 02/04/2020 13:55

A jay landed on a small tree right outside my kitchen window today. A couple have ventured into the garden but never so close. It's such a beautiful bird but so skittish!

I think we have some sort of small bird of prey in the woods near us but I've never seen it, only heard it. We also get buzzards as we are close to a motorway. My BIL lives in an area with hundreds of kites. They are spectacular to watch. Love watching the birds, especially now.

Fuss · 02/04/2020 15:00

We caught one do it on CCTV in our garden just before Christmas. It took a huge pigeon straight out of the sky.
Made a heck of a mess.

I just saw a sparrowhawk take a collared dove in my garden!
OldSpeclkledHen · 02/04/2020 15:01

Wowsers thats sooo cool (obvs not for the pigeon though!)

TwoZeroTwoZero · 02/04/2020 15:05

Cool. We saw one catch, kill and eat a starling in our garden a few years ago. My dc, who were only around 3/4 at the time, were enthralled! When it had finished we had a look at what remained of the starling as we put it in the bin. They still remember it now. Dc 1 refers to it as "that spiky bird" Grin

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 02/04/2020 15:06

We have one that visits occasionally, but next door cut down a large tree a couple of months ago so I hope it still comes (line of gardens and I think it used tree as a stopping off point).
I was washing up and I saw what I thought was a jay land on the fence. Beautiful sparrow hawk looked round imperiously then flew off. Sometimes find wings and feathers in the garden.

fleamadonna · 02/04/2020 15:07

I once saw a sparrow hawk catch a pigeon while I was in the middle of a driving lesson. Instructor was not impressed. Apparently it doesn’t warrant an emergency stop.

FlibbertyGiblets · 02/04/2020 15:08

We get the Sparrowhawk tearing overhead once the house martins arrive, like an arrow; a little pouff of feathers settle on the grass as the blackbirds clatter the alarm too late.

I should start a column ^ [deluded]
