This is just out of curiosity. Some areas I can probably guess. I know the cheaper bitss in London.

I was watching that auction property programme. I know it is years out of date but nearly choked when one house went for £40k! Yes it needed work but even so and yes I know it was a few years ago!

West Yorkshire is cheap too. My dad bought his semi detached house a few years ago for £60k - 3 bed, HUGE garden (back, rear and side). He moved in straight away - not much needed changing apart from carpets. And it is 20min drive to Leeds so not in a middle of nowhere:)

I guess I shouldn't run down these areas (anymore than they have been ! A mumsnetter might live there! My own area (Hammersmith) might turn some people's nose up. It has it's fair share of crime of course. Some grottty bits but lovely parks and some posh bits too. I love the public transport (tube and buses. Very frequent. The people are a mixed bunch, both ethnically and personality wise!

Our local cinema has now re-opened on the river. I have only been once so far (thanks CV!!!). We also have a local theatre and of course the Hammersmith Apollo or whaever it calls itself this week - Eventim or something! Nice restaurants too, though most up towards Chiswick. Of course we have the River Cafe!

To be fair to West Yorkshire, it is quite possible to spend £1M and be 20-30 mins from Leeds city centre.

Bits of the Scottish Borders, but its economically deprived and the armpit of Scotland. Lovely to visit, but you're always an outsider.

I live on Teesside and I can confirm that you would be taking your life into your own hands if you chose to move to any of the properties linked above.
This being said, a house in a decent area here is still much cheaper than in many other places, a reasonable well-located 3 bed would be £160,000-£200,000 depending on area, state of repair etc

Plus houses in certain areas never go up in price, even if you do them up. If you rent them out you’ll get whatever housing benefit it is for that area, £380 a month for a 3 bed semi. A friend of mine bought 2,houses in Goldthorpe years ago for £25,000 hoping to rent them out. He’s still got them but they’re boarded up now.

West Yorkshire can be expensive, depends which area. Bradford is dirt cheap for example but Leeds is extortionate. Wakefield can be cheap but the surrounding areas not so much because they’re quite leafy.

South Yorkshire is generally cheap but there’s a good reason for that Grin.

lalafafa I am just going to sit on my hands then!
