Dd is very thin, underweight but eats healthy if small amounts. Noticed tonight her spine is quite unaligned. I don't know if this looks normal or not. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thank you

It looks unusual to me but then I'm no expert. Does it cause her any discomfort?

GreyishDays · 01/04/2020 22:58

How old is she? I don’t know about her spine, but it might make a difference to someone’s answer.
Does she see a dr for her weight?

Pushmepullyou · 01/04/2020 23:00

That does look like it could be a curvature. It’s not necessarily a problem - I have a curved spine and other than looking a bit lopsided it hasn’t caused me any problems. How old is she? I wouldn’t have thought there’d be any immediate panic but would probably take her along to the GP once they’re operating a bit more normally as they can get worse as you grow

InDubiousBattle · 01/04/2020 23:01

(How old is she op?

Elieza · 01/04/2020 23:02

Phone the gp. Perhaps you could email the photos? I don’t know if that kind of things allowed but it may help the doctor if he doesn’t want patients on the surgery. You could ask him if that would be helpful. Her spine seems to have some squint vertebrae but I don’t know if that’s how they are sometimes.

MotherOfDragonite · 01/04/2020 23:04

It could be mild scoliosis, OP. Not that uncommon, and not usually a sign of anything serious either. I had it as a child and it corrected itself by the time I was an adult.

It is worth talking to the GP but you can probably do that over the phone and by sending a photo. I was monitored every couple of years as I grew up to check it was correcting itself (apparently it usually does). They can also give a referral to specialist physio if it seems likely to help.

I have no idea but if that was my dd, I'd definitely take her to the doctors.

loveskaka · 01/04/2020 23:08

doesn't seem right

DangerMouse17 · 01/04/2020 23:08

Scoliosis to me I think (which I have and it doesnt cause me major issues, I'm just less flex in my back).

Your dd does look very underweight. Is she under medical care to support her with her diet?

Rainingdogsandcats · 01/04/2020 23:09

Thank you all. She will be 13 in a couple of weeks.

Elieza what is squint vertebrae?

No she's not under gp for her weight. She has an absolutely tiny appetite. She has Asperger's and food simply does not interest her.

She weighs less than her 9 year old sister and is 5ft 3

Get her to bend over, then look from behind. If one side of her ribs seems higher than the other, then it probably is scoliosis.
Even then, if it's mild, she won't necessarily need any treatment.
I have a mild scoliosis too, and apart from pregnancy, and sometimes bending down too quickly (so one of my ribs goes under the others - ouch!) it doesn't bother me.

DangerMouse17 · 01/04/2020 23:27

I would get her checked OP. It's probably scoliosis etc but with her age and weight challenge, often very underweight youngsters can experience bone issues and osteoporosis. Worth making sure and getting some peace of mind overall, bless her. Is she in any discomfort with the back now?

ShortyShortLegs · 01/04/2020 23:32

Hi, @Rainingcatsanddogs my three kids all have Scoliosis (curvature of the spine).

There is a test you can do at home, The Adams Test, to check...ask your daughter to stand in front of you, bend forward sliding her hands down her thighs to her knees. You can the check to see if the spine is straight or curved. Also, check for the ribs being higher on one side. Another sign to check for is one shoulder higher than the other when she is standing up straight.

She will need an X-ray, then referral onto a spinal surgeon...don't be fobbed off with physio, orthopaedics, etc. or it will delay the diagnosis.

To me (I'm not an expert) it looks like mild scoliosis. But don't panic, it can be treated if necessary. It may not ever get any worse, but often puberty and growth spurts s when it is first noticed as it progresses.

There are a couple of Facebook groups, the first is for parents.

There is also Scoliosis Association UK

I hope this helps 😊

ShortyShortLegs so I did the Adams test and yes to all the above.

Her right shoulder is higher, her spine is not straight and the ribs on the higher shoulder are higher.

I'm so worried now, she's already having investigation for absence seizures, now this.

We have private healthcare, will that make a difference?
