First World Problem - Coffee in a Time of Covid

(Semi) light hearted

We’re almost out of Nespresso capsules but expect delivery to be delayed due to, well, the obvious.

I have unearthed a packet of ground coffee from the back of the kitchen cupboard (a relic from an Xmas hamper a couple of years ago). It’s for a cafetière, but we don’t have one. We do have a mini stovetop Moka pot instead. Will this work?!

There's one way to find out Brew

Redshoeblueshoe · 01/04/2020 20:36

And if it's not too good stick some whiskey in it

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2020 20:37

Try it. Or just steep the coffee and then put it through a tea strainer or muslin or whatever to filter out the grounds.

I don't know what a Moka pot is, but basically all you need to do is combine the coffee with the right amount of hot water and strain out the grounds.
A colleague of mine is seriously hard core and just puts grounds in a mug and lets it settle before drinking it!

Twickerhun · 01/04/2020 20:38

Related question I sent adH out on an urgent mission for coffee beans (both of us are key workers working from home with two under 5s - coffee is essential). He came back with ground, we have no method of making ground coffee. Is this grounds for divorce? Unreasonable behaviour??

goodwinter · 01/04/2020 20:40

@twickerhun I may be an idiot, but what do you do with the beans if you can't make coffee with grounds?

Unescorted · 01/04/2020 20:40

2 years at the back of the cupboard is a case of Once was Coffee. No amount of love is going to make that OK to drink. Don't damage the whiskey or waste the water.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2020 20:42

Of course you have the means to make coffee from ground coffee, it's been explained already. You don't actually need fancy equipment.

Beans if you had no way of grinding them would have been a more serious problem. In early February DH checked we still have a hand grinder.

DianaT1969 · 01/04/2020 20:46

Agreed. It won't be drinkable after 2 years. You might find a cafetiere in Sainsbury's or Argos. Argos are still delivering.

Twickerhun · 01/04/2020 20:52

We have a bean to cup machine which gives us amazing fresh coffee at the touch of a button. No kettle, no caffetier, no stove top thingy.
Yes I could boil water on the stove and filter through tights but why should I if the shop sells beans and ground coffee next to each other and the idiot picks the wrong bag?

guffaux · 01/04/2020 20:57

arf at twickenhun - 'grounds' for divorce Grin

StrongTeaDropOfMilkNoSugar · 01/04/2020 20:57

Thanks everyone.

The best before date on the pack is April 2020, so agree it’s getting close to obsolescence, but it won’t kill me.

I think I’ll give it a go in the Moka, and if it’s a disaster then try the improvised filters suggested (or crack open the whisky)! I had contemplated buying a cafetière, but thought our retail supply chains were better off sorting out bread and bog roll for people! Thanks!

No bean grinder ? .. 'tis easy .. just pop them in the blender.. bean doing it for years ! Then pour just off the boil water over them and strain through an old (hopefully clean) baby Muslim or fine cotton scrap if you don't have a sieve..

Patchworkpatty · 01/04/2020 21:05

🤗🤗🤗🤗😩 Fgs !! Don't strain ANYTHING through a baby Muslim !! Or baby Christians /Hindus or Sikhs for that matter .. the result will be in drinkable!!

Try a MUSLIN far better for you ..

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2020 21:09

My blender doesn't have a mill ... have a separate coffee mill, an aero press and a v6 filter.

And we have a large quantity of very good whole beans we got by mail from the coffee merchant we usually go to. (The more I read on MN the more I appreciate my DHGrin)

He came back with ground, we have no method of making ground coffee.

Grin Lordy!

Water + saucepan. Heat till very hot, not boiling. Remove from heat. Throw in a dash of cold water. Let it sit a bit. Pour carefully into warmed jug or cups. (Grounds will stay in saucepan.)

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 01/04/2020 21:15

Although yes, purchasing ground coffee under any circumstances is a good part of the way towards unforgivable ...

lettersbyowl · 01/04/2020 21:22

Nespresso capsules ordered this week on amazon arrived the next day here so might be an option... just in case this doesn't all work out Grin £20 well spent!!

Igmum · 01/04/2020 21:26

Why has no one said LTB yet? Is Mumsnet broken?

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/04/2020 21:43

What grind is the coffee? It’ll need to be espresso ground which is finer than cafetière ground. It needs to be finer to slow the steam down as it’s forced through the coffee.

2 big spoons in a small pan, put in boiling water and bring up to the boil. Take off the heat. Just before pouring stir it with a cold spoon and the grounds fall to the bottom
If you want Turkish coffee bash up a couple of cardamoms and add the seeds at the start. Smile

user1468766051 · 01/04/2020 21:46

I did a nespresso online order on Friday and my order arrived today 😊

TheFutureMrsHardy · 01/04/2020 21:49

I'm embarrassed to say we've completely filled our Nespresso recycling bag in a week................

And we had next day delivery from Amazon on the Starbucks pods.

LookingGlassMilk · 01/04/2020 21:50

I would just put it in hot water and then strain it through whatever you can find.

I felt so crap on Friday I thought I was coming down with the virus. But it turned out it was just coffee withdrawal. I had gone a few days without any. Found an old bag in the back of a cupboard and then I felt normal again.
