Does your dog get upset if he’s shut away from the rest of the family?

Pup is 7 months old and he’s always been pretty independent and not needed us in the same room as him. This week he’s been a nightmare, if he’s shut in the kitchen and can hear us upstairs he starts scratching and howling at the bloody door.

I don’t really know what to do with him, I need to move around the house but he’s driving me potty! Any suggestions? (We don’t let him upstairs as we have 2 cats, they all get on pretty well but I want them to be able to sleep up there in peace)

I’ve managed to borrow a baby gate off a neighbour so I’ve got that on standby to try if he kicks off again, he’s still asleep at the minute though (well I’m guessing he’s asleep, he’s not howling at least!)

My 8 year old rescue brings her food in from her room piece by piece to eat with us.

This dog survived in the wild for an unknown length of time and lived god knows where for years beforehand so definitely acquired notions! She is also happiest on a lap or a stomach.

@Circletime27 he really is terrible and always has been. His brother could care less but he likes to be next to us at all times. Usually in between ... lately though he has taken himself off to our bed for a bit. Maybe he's maturing or maybe it's because we're home 24/7 now. When we're not home he goes to full time daycare. He's 16 months now. He's fine alone for a couple of hours but never tried much longer. By alone I mean no one else is in the house ... he can't stand for there to be someone here that he's not next to. It wasn't worth the stress in the end so he usually has someone with him or just comes with us if it's more than 2.5 hours. He does get himself in an awful state when not next to us. He's a whippet though and they are known for separation anxiety. Our previous whippet was the same. 3 hours max.
