Using ham water to make soup?

Boiling a ham in water, was planning om using the water to make the soup, but looking online and it says it'll be too salty to use??

First time ive ever made soup with actual ham and not just a stock cube so not really sure what to do...

I did it but added extra water to dilute it

Swimslikeamole · 01/04/2020 16:49

Soak the ham first. Anything from a few hours to a day. You can change the water a couple of times. Then use the water you cook the ham in. I haven't done this for ages, thanks for the reminder!

Might be a little salty. But can make a nice base for a pea, ham and mint soup.

I did this once with a ham I cooked in the slow cooker. It was very very salty.

ScottishStottie · 01/04/2020 16:58

Its currently boiling so too late to soak it first 😔

What if i use some of the water then dilute it with normal water...?

The plan was to boil the ham, then add the veggies to the pot with the water, make the soup then add the ham in when its nearly ready. But instead could pour out half the water, use half the ham water and add some normal water to dilute the saltiness?

DP uses potato and it really seems to reduce saltiness.

ScottishStottie · 01/04/2020 17:08

I dont have any potatoes, i have carrots, parsnips, turnip, onion and might have some lentils in the cupboard.

It should be fine. I find ham not nearly so salty nowadays and always use the stock for soup. You can taste as you go and add more water if you think it's too salty . I always add a couple if cloves , star anise and a cinnamon stick to the boiling water - it flavours the ham nicely and makes amazing soup, especially with root veg.

WarmSausageTea · 01/04/2020 17:12

Anything starchy should help, but give it a taste, it might be okay as it is.

Madvixen · 01/04/2020 17:13

This will make the most amazing lentil soup without diluting it at all.

It's one of my most favourite comfort foods and I always keep some ham stock in the freezer so I can rustle some up when I need a cuddle in a mug

MsRinky · 01/04/2020 17:16

It will be delicious, just don't add additional salt when you make the soup.

Cohle · 01/04/2020 17:24

It makes amazing lentil soup, amazing.

It is a bit salty but in a delicious way, not an inedible way.

TheTeaCosyofDoom · 01/04/2020 17:49

I have a big pan of butternut squash, sweet potato and lentil soup made with ham stock that's cooling down on the stove at the moment prior to being blended. If I don't have any ham stock from cooked ham, I always use Knorr ham stock cubes. Not as good as the real thing, but delicious all the same. Enjoy!

hotchocdrinker · 01/04/2020 17:51

It should be fine. I do it all the time and just don't add any additional salt. My favourite is pea soup!

Redshoeblueshoe · 01/04/2020 17:55

I did this last week. Chucked a load of veg in, whilst the ham was cooking, and some lentils. Then liquidised it. Delicious

JigsawsAreInPieces · 01/04/2020 17:59

Google Delia Smith London Particular - it's a (thick) soup made with the water you've boiled bacon in. Absolutely delicious.

SoapIsYourFriend · 01/04/2020 18:35

You could change the water and boil up again.

oooompa · 01/04/2020 18:51

I've made soup using water I'd boiled Gammon in, it was lovely (my kids favourite soup)

I didnt add any extra salt and diluted with extra water

ScottishStottie · 01/04/2020 19:39

Thought i would update, the soup has been made and sampled, and was delicious! When the soup was simmering away i needed to add more water to thin it out a bit so ended up with a nice hammy salty taste! Thank you for convincing me not to throw away the ham water like i was going to after googling!

Benefit to lockdown is that im being a lot better with making food from scratch, was lovely to have my kitchen smelling like my grannies kitchen 😊
