Is booking a holiday for December a bad idea?

I'm most likely going to lose my summer holiday and as petty as it sounds in the grand scheme of things I'm gutted. Easyjet keep sending me emails saying their winter flights are published and on sale. I could book cheap-ish flights to Spain, Portugal or Morocco at this stage and hold off getting any accommodation until nearer the time. Obviously no crystal balls, but is it likely things may have resumed to fairly normal by then?

I don't think anyone really knows for sure. I understand the temptation, but I don't think I would book anything just yet. It just isn't clear how this will pan out at all.

We have decided we will wait until things are definitely heading back to normal, whenever that may be, and bide our time looking for a last minute holiday then. In the meantime, I have been leaning on DH to take the opportunity now to renew his passport, which expires in September, or we are going nowhere for a long time anyway.

I wouldn’t risk it personally.

Zacromagnons · 01/04/2020 16:50

I wouldn't do it in a million years!

Monkeytapper · 01/04/2020 16:50

I wouldn’t...and weather won’t be great in the places you mention in December.

Will you find travel insurance that will cover you? If yes then it will be ok. If not I think that's your answer.

MadeForThis · 01/04/2020 16:59

Many airlines won't exist after this. International travel will also be vastly different. Borders will need to open again, immunity, vaccinations.

I wouldn't book again. But I suppose if everyone asks for refunds then the airlines will collapse quicker.

I own a kennels, I have had 4 bookings today for November.
I'm not sure if I'll see those dogs but am quite happy to write them in the diary.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't looked into insurance yet, that will probably tip the balance one way depending on the outcome. I don't need sunbathing weather, just a bit of sunshine. Been to all of those countries in winter and they were fine. @twoheaped glad you are getting some bookings, it must be such a devastating blow in the summer months.
I know it sounds really petty but I live for my holidays. I'm really frugal during the year so I can travel once or twice, always budget holidays but it's just an escapism for me. Against the bigger picture it is trivial but still the thought of not getting away is really upsetting. Will keep an eye on the flights but not book anything until the next few months pan out.
