Knitting with a magic loop - how?!

I’ve started knitting a sock using the winnick mum method, I’ve put my ribbing on to a magic loop but can’t for the life of me understand how it connects together?
Any tips?

Hi,

Don't know for sure but do you just knit into the first stitch on the opposite side to where your yarn is?

I may have this completely wrong but I'm sure somebody clever will be along, who can actually help Smile

I've anyways assumed you just keep going. So the stitches pass from the end in your left hand to that in your right. But don't actually know v

Always, and ignore the v

I can't see the rest of your needle cable so it looks to me like you are using teeny circulars not magic loop with standard circulars.

PickAChew · 01/04/2020 15:34

You need a really long cable and you knit it in 2 halves with one half resting on the cable while the other half is on the needles. It's probably best to watch a few videos until something clicks.

PickAChew · 01/04/2020 15:39

I don't have a sock on the go, atm but just remembered an abandoned sleeve under my bed. This really needed a longer cable than this but it did the job. Ignore the creased bedding :o

Your needle isn't long enough for magic loop, you need a much longer circular, if your needle is the circumference you need you can just join and knit in a circle. There's some great videos on YouTube, and ravelry is a great resource.

RaininSummer · 01/04/2020 16:10

If you are using a small circular I would start by crossing over the first two stitches to join it into a circle. You can still do this and then just stitch up the little gap at the top. Magic loop needs bigger needles. I prefer to use mini circulars

RaininSummer · 01/04/2020 16:12

Actually it looks like you have been going backwards and forwards rather than round and round.

Stevienickssleeves · 01/04/2020 16:45

Doesnt your needle extend? There should be a flexible bit that links the two sides

BigRedBoat · 01/04/2020 16:50

I don't know if this helps but this a hat done with magic loop, the excess cord from the needle is at the opposite side to the needle tips.

Aah, good, not just me who can't see magic loop cable then!

The Winwick mum patterns are given separately for dpns, magic loop and teeny circulars. You've got the teeny circulars OP so you need to follow those instructions.

IIRC the WM pattern has a few straight town before joining into the round, which makes it much easier if you're new to circular knitting, you just join with your tail when done.

There's a Winwick Mum FB group which might be worth joining.

Yarnivore · 01/04/2020 18:13

straight rows (not town!)
