When is it likely construction workers will return to work

I know nobody can say for sure but wonder what people estimate? My DP works in the construction/building industry putting up frames for new homes ... something along those lines! He's out of work unpaid, not entitled to anything and we've just recently took out a mortgage which is not sustainable on my wage only. I'm ill with worry and stress about him being off for months and months. I assume it might be longer for offices etc and people who are able to work from home but I just have no idea what we are going to do.

I originally posted this in CV but find there is it often little response on there with stuff like this.

My builder husband is taking two weeks off, we might be able to stretch to another week.

Then he will have to go back. Two mortgages- ours and a rental where tenants cant afford their rent now. My salary wont be enough. Government help could come in june, no guarantee though.

Hes going to work alone on a building job, where gloves and a mask and wash hands etc.

We are worried sick too.

My dh works on building sites is off for 2 weeks At present but been warned it could be for the full 12 weeks.

Contact your bank to see if you can get a mortgage break due to this pandemic.

My husband works on big new build sites and can't because they're shut now. You can apply for a 3 month mortgage break, I've heard it's very simply to do (we rent so doesn't apply to us). You can claim universal credit in the meantime before the govt pays the grants from June.

I'm surprised how many people don't think to apply for benefits. My husbands colleague just said "what's universal credit" when we said we'd applied. Check out turn2us or entitledto benefits calculators to see what you might be eligible for.

We haven't even made the first mortgage payment yet so that's why I thought this wouldn't apply to us, we could scrape by with everything for the first month of mortgage and bills but after that we will really struggle. He's been off since last Monday but everything so up in the air the moment. I will have a look at universal credit and see if he would be entitled

The government website says construction sites have not been asked to close, but they have sent everyone home unpaid. DP is willing to work if he can but just a really shit situation

Depending on his contractural status he could be furloughed or claim the self employed equivalent.
But I'm thinking it's going to last 12 weeks minimum.

Yes the government is saying construction can go ahead, however many companies are finding it impossible to meet the Social Distancing recommendations on sites.
Sites are generally never the the cleanest of places and for years its been drilled into everyone's you can't argue with safety. So you have a massive nobody wants to take the risk of the virus flying round site cabins.

I think a huge part of the reason Construction hasn't been stopped by the government, is the Nightingale Hospitals that they need construction workers for.

They can't exactly have double standards.

And some councils are also using the schools closures as an opportunity to do maintenance works that are normally done in summer.

Escapeistheonlyoption · 01/04/2020 12:27

Essential builds (hospitals, schools etc) are allowed to continue, however materials are expected to be in very short supply within 3 weeks.

How is your DP employed?

paperless · 01/04/2020 12:41

He's a sub contractor, was due to start permanent work with the people he was carrying out the work for but that hadn't started before everything blew up. He won't get much help with the 80% thing as he's looked j to that already

Its he classed as self employed?
He could claim that way, the government have announced a scheme that will pay 80% of average profit over the last 3 years.

I know it's a complete minefield trying to navigate it.
