Can anyone identify this beetle ( warning picture of beetle )

what is this beetle ?
why is my house plagued by them ?
and how do I get rid of the little buggers ?

I often used to find him in the kitchen which I didn't like but I could cope with but recently I've been finding them in my bedroom on my bed on my work desk they always seem to just suddenly appear as well and sit there for ages doing nothing until I go and find something put them in so I can fling them outside and then they vanish when my back is turned.

Can anyone identify this beetle ( warning picture of beetle )

It's a weevil, not sure what kind

ovener · 31/03/2020 22:35

It's a weevil! Maybe a black vine weevil? Could they be emerging from your house plants?

AlCalavicci · 31/03/2020 22:46

I thought weevil were smaller Confused .
No I have no house plants, I can kill a dandelion at 20 paces !
It is also really hard , I discovered to my dismay one day that they are very crunchy if you do stand on it actually takes a fair bit of force to squash one

Bezalelle · 31/03/2020 22:57

A despicable creature, that's what it is.

msmith501 · 31/03/2020 22:59

It's a vine weevil and they are not as small as you may imagine. To be honest it's a bit early in the year for them but the weather (assuming you're in the Uk) has been rather mild over winter. There is an institute that is looking for sightings of them if you are interested in knowing more

ovener · 31/03/2020 22:59

I think weevils vary in size depending on the species. RIP little crunchy weevil! Could they be coming in open windows? Apparently they like the warmth of houses when the nights are cold outside. They're not harmful.. maybe keep a cup in each room for a while for quick flinging?

AlCalavicci · 31/03/2020 23:44

Ah you are all right it is a black crunchie vine weevil , I can do well without them trying to share my bed , esp as a lot of my bedding is dark blue , they are not easy to spot !
I dont often have my kitchen window open but I have one of them brush type things on the bottom of me door that does not fit very well ,
and recently during the warm weather I have left my bedroom window open more often so apparent I have created several beetle flaps around my home ,
@ovener they may not be harmful but by god they make you shift quick when you find yourself sharing a bed with one !
I would not squish one on purpose but I dont think they appreciate the flying lesson they get out of my bedroom window .
@msmith501 yes I am in the UK north west, England . I wonder why people want to know about them and where they are infesting , I am glad I don't have any fruit plants , they sound very destructive

AlCalavicci · 31/03/2020 23:45

@Bezalelle , do you have them invading your bed too ?

Fuckingfuckssake · 31/03/2020 23:45

We had something like this years ago, I thought they were carpet beetles? Anyway, a bug bomb soon sorted them out.

Davros · 01/04/2020 00:02

I can identify him, that's Fred. He was round my house a week or so ago but he's now socially isolating with you

AlCalavicci · 01/04/2020 00:21

@Fuckingfuckssake , they are big and strong enough to pick my carpet off and run off with it given half a chance !

@Davros
Ah its Fred is it ? I thought it was Bob , that must be why he ignored me when I told him to feck off , he can go for his hour exercise and my front door will hit him on the ass on the way out Grin

Ringo?

AlCalavicci · 01/04/2020 07:04

@motorcyclenumptiness GrinGrin

I hope the not so fab four are social isolating separately, I don't want the rest of the band here too

OP posts:
ovener · 01/04/2020 07:46

Grin I mean I'm all for beetle welfare but if they're in your bed with you that's another story! Just burn the bed and be done with it!

PlanDeRaccordement · 01/04/2020 07:56

Normally they ear plants, but you have no houseplants. But inside a house, they also eat dry food like flour, rice, cereal, pasta, nuts. That’s why they were in your kitchen- they were looking for food. So make sure your food is well sealed up and the kitchen counters and floors kept clean.

If you eat at your desk or in bed, that will have attracted them to search for crumbs of food there.
A bug bomb would kill them, but you will also want to make your home a food desert to any new invaders.

msmith501 · 01/04/2020 09:30

@AlCalavicci Hi OP, I am also in the North West a few miles south of Preston and that's why I recognised your picture. We've had a rather wet and mild winter and I don't think it helped. My understanding about the data gathering and research is to see how far North the beetles have spread this year as a result of the warmer climate - and by inference, ehat the effect will be on crop predation etc.

Davros · 01/04/2020 11:16

Alcalavicci I think Fred is the less friendly of the two. Sorry, bit stir crazy!!

PurpleBlueAnemone · 01/04/2020 11:26

Interesting vine weevil fact! They play dead when disturbed.
Slightly horrifying vine weevil fact.....just google vine weevil larvae. Yuk!

AlCalavicci · 01/04/2020 22:46

@PlanDeRaccordement, ha ha there is no pasta or flour in this house ( or any other house I suspect ) at the moment so they will nave to hunt elsewhere.

Crumbs in bed , no thanks .

@msmith501 oooh we are only a few miles from each other Smile
I will get in touch with them and let them know the little buggers have been lurking up here for a while now .

@Davros , I am not sure which is worse been ignored by my cat master or by a bug Confused

@PurpleBlueAnemone they are very good at playing dead which makes them all the harder to see on dark bedding , the larvae are revolting looking aren't they

Davros · 01/04/2020 22:53

My master cat has got me pinned down. I'm trapped, can't get up to tidy etc

SirVixofVixHall · 01/04/2020 22:55

I like weevils. Their walk is particularly endearing.

AlCalavicci · 01/04/2020 22:57

@Davros , My master had me pinned down until half a hour ago , he is now insisting I play fetch with him , he buries food too, He thinks he is a dog

Vine weevil eat plants. The grubs eat roots, the adults eat leaves. They live outside and won't infest your house. Sometimes hidden in plants bought for mothers day etc. Sometimes come in unnoticed on clothing from your being in garden. Boot him out and don't worry. No need to burn house down or even spray.
