Why has Tesco stoped stocking all the own brand cheaper ranges of everything?

We're on a budget and used to buy lots of Tesco cheaper/own brand ranges of tinned tomatoes, biscuits, etc.

My local Tesco is fully stocked again but they don't seem to have any of these ranges anymore, they only seem to be stocking the expensive ranges. Why is this and is it the same everywhere else?

the supply is gone?

other brands have more suppliers so s plentiful supply to distribute i guess

Samcro · 31/03/2020 16:46

strange, i went to asda today and noticed the oposite.

willowpatterns · 31/03/2020 16:47

I remember reading somewhere that the supermarkets carry loads of different ranges in some products, and they were trying to narrow that down to a few - it makes the food manufacturing process and the supply chain easier apparently.

I'm sure they could opt to stock the value ranges and not the expensive brands but which would you pick to maximise profits?

CatAndFiddle · 31/03/2020 16:55

There is more profit in branded goods, and supermarkets have had to narrow their ranges to ensure supply. There will also be a little bit of trying to keep the big players happy e.g. unilever and the like. If you are having to narrow your range, you dont want to upset the big boys.

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/03/2020 16:58

Every tesco is different - each store uses data from what it’s customers buy. Your store may just not have many buyers of their own branded stuff. Try another Tesco or failing that another brand - apparently B&M is brilliant at the moment if you have one open where you are.

StormyLovesOdd · 31/03/2020 17:05

Thanks, will have to try a different supermarket next time. I live in quite a deprived area so I don't think it's because that's what most people buy.

Go to Aldi it’s much cheaper!

StormyLovesOdd · 31/03/2020 17:15

I do usually shop at Aldi or Lidl but they're shelves were still really bare in the one near me last time I went and I didn't want to be out longer than absolutely necessary so thought Tesco's were more likely to have everything.

My usual weekly shop has cost me at least £30 more than usual this week

My closest sainsburys is on the smaller side (but not a local). They carry very few basics ranges and it is simply to boost profits on limited space.

Now with the situation the way it is I'm not surprised they're restocking with more expensive ranges as people have little choice but to buy what is there and pay a bit more for it.

PickAChew · 31/03/2020 17:40

The factories that make the cheaper ranges will also be facing limited supplies and/or higher prices for their own raw materials so won't be able to supply at the necessary price point.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 31/03/2020 17:49

I did notice in Waitrose last week that there was hardly any stuff on special offer. I guess it was to put people off panic buying but it made the shopping a bit expensive.

Troels · 31/03/2020 17:52

I think they are just accepting delivery and stocking whatever they can get now.
At Aldi the other day, they only had Heinz beans, non of their own brand. So I bought Heinz.
Asda had only name brand pasta so I got one bag costing twice the price, as well as rice, no value brand at all, only one costing more than double for a smaller bag.
Groceries are cost me a lot more because we too buy loads of no name value brand foods.

StormyLovesOdd · 31/03/2020 19:47

Hope they go back to stocking the cheaper brands again soon, I can't afford to keep shopping like this.

Profiteering

Ulysses · 31/03/2020 20:38

I noticed that they didn't have many special offers when I went for my weekly shop last week. I usually get barista style instant coffee and there is usually at least one brand on offer at a time but all of them were over #5 a tin. There's hardly anything available that's on offer. I think it's profiteering as well.

minisoksmakehardwork · 31/03/2020 20:59

Tesco did announce they have removed all their multi buy offers @ulysses. I would like to be generous and think that some of the own brand/value brand stock issues is because the value line suppliers are supplying the big brands instead - eg Allison flour instead of Tesco own/stockwell. But I also suspect part of it is Tesco have realised they can recoup lost profits by stocking higher priced items as people will be forced to buy them if that is what they need. There hasn't been an own brand pack of biscuits in our local stores (2 big ones) for weeks. But if you want mcvities, the whole range is fully stocked every time.

EatingIsMyHobby · 31/03/2020 21:04

I've noticed that supermarkets have put their prices up a lot with recent events. I understand they need to make money etc etc etc but is there any need to drastically hike so many prices up when lots of people are struggling?!

ItchyScratch · 31/03/2020 21:14

Simply because they sell out immediately and the suppliers haven’t caught up with unexpected high demand

CarrotCakeMuffins · 31/03/2020 21:24

The food factories can run much more efficiently if they make fewer different products so they can get more product to the supermarkets quicker. Eg Allinsons Flour mentioned above could go to all supermarkets rather than Tesco flour which could only go to Tesco.
This is why there are currently reduced ranges in stores.

ShrimpSymphony · 31/03/2020 21:30

To make more money basically

invisibleoldwoman · 31/03/2020 21:34

Tesco sent out an email which says:

“To get our supply chain running smoothly again, we are focusing on simple pricing for single products, and have removed multi-buy promotions. Easter eggs are one exception – we bought our stock before recent events, so there are plenty to go around and we’ll continue with our promotions as normal.”

Which ties in with what CarrotCakeMuffins said. .

Wordofwarning · 31/03/2020 21:43

Quite a lot of it will be because the people who make the value range also make their own branded range. They will focus on producing beans in tins, all supermarkets take the branded version. There is huge demand for the beans, therefore for speed and stock they will just produce the one type of beans rather than the store's own brand.

And yes, supermarkets are consolidating their ranges so everyone can get what they need vs necessarily want.

The promos won’t happen on the usual things purely because bean makers don’t need to entice you to purchase, they can barely keep up with demand :)

goose1964 · 31/03/2020 21:52

Yesterday I bought not cross buns on a multi buy.
