Can anyone recommend a good compact printer/scanner/copier for home working?

We bought an HP Envy 5020 for £40 in February when our Canon died rather suddenly. Was planning on it being a cheap stopgap but it's been plenty good enough for us. I don't WFH but I am on several committees so produce docs and print a variety of things out for that. We don't tend to print many photos so can't comment on that.

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Scans and copies
  • Printouts look pretty good for the documents we've printed
  • Paper goes in the bottom so no paper sticking out the top
  • Can sign up for HP Smart Ink. We've done this as the ink is just sent through the post and they provide a bag to return empty cartridges for recycling. We also got a 3 month free trial to test it out which is good at the moment (also a con, see below)

Cons:

  • Bigger footprint than I imagined but obviously it has to scan an A4 size, maybe it's an optical illusion as I don't think it is bigger than our old printer. It's not very tall though, which is helpful.
  • Not sure it will manage thick card, but takes thin card fine
  • Doesn't print edge to edge but that's not a problem for us
  • HP Smart Ink is very cleverly priced and you do need to keep an eye on your printout total to avoid a hefty bill. They do supply an app and a website to do this though.

And it's wifi which is another big pro for us. You download the app to set it all up and it was easy to do.

We have a Cannon Pixma MG7750. It's brilliant. Doesn't waste nearly as much ink as the HP we had before.

I just got a hp envy 5010 on Friday and so far it's been great! Set it up on the ipad and it's dead easy to use. I signed up for the instant ink, paying £1.99 a month for 50 pages, then it automatically sends you ink when u need it. Been using it to print off work for home-schooling and its coping fine with colour, black&white etc. Also does automatic double sided printing.

Got an HP envy and I love it because it prints well, WiFi and HP ink only costs £2 a month and you get about 50 prints.

Thanks guys. I might be printing quite a volume of documents - I'm a Solicitor - would it be ok for that? Or do I need something bigger?

One downside of our cannon is the paper tray isn't huge. You may find if you are printing large amounts of documents you will find it frustrating constantly refilling the tray. Maybe they do a similar model with a better capacity?

If you’re printing lots, do not buy the HP Envy 5020.

It’s a good quality printer, but the ink only lasts 4 days for me, so it works out very expensive!

I might be printing quite a volume of documents
Get an Office Printer then.

  • they will hold more paper, often a whole ream
  • get one which does automatic double side printing
  • the ink cartridges are usually bigger
  • they usually print a bit faster and are better made
  • although the initial outlay will be more the price per page will usually be better

After that it's just your own personal preference.
I would choose a Canon
See these

HP Envy, I've had it probably 3+ years now and it still works great. Wifi, so you can just press print from anywhere in the house that has Wifi reach. I'd definitely get another one in the future.

Thanks for that link @DanFmDorking
And to everyone else that's responded
