and normally what is the highest you would be willing to spend for a mobile

Whenever my old phone breaks or becomes useless. I tried to sell on my last one (I think was an iPhone 7) and it was worth about £20... not even worth the hassle of selling on. It's currently sat in a basket of wires that I'm not sure what are for.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/03/2020 16:35

Santaclauswhosthat get another Motorola , think mine was £80 and it's fab. I only every get Motorolas as they last so long.

Santaclauswhosthat · 31/03/2020 16:55

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I think I will! Hopefully I'll get another year out of this one - like I say I just notice it's filling up now but it's not crashing or freezing or anything yet. Even if it doesn't last till then, £60 for three years is pretty amazing.

ElektraPlektra · 31/03/2020 17:03

When it dies.
I've had my current phone for 3.5 years and the screen is cracked, the headphone jack no longer works and it is getting slower and slower. I hope I can get another six months use out of it, then I'll buy another phone outright. Paying more than £8/month, which is what I currently pay, is madness imo.

jackparlabane · 31/03/2020 17:13

About every 18 months - 2 years, when the battery stops lasting a day.
I've spend about £150 on all my phones.

I spend an extra fiver on a wallet case for my phones which is vital as I drop my phone a dozen times a day. Also good place for emergency cash. Never had a crack or jack failure.

Isolationpyjamas · 31/03/2020 17:15

When it doesn't work anymore, I need a smart phone for work but I struggle with the cobalt aspect of all new tech and how that is mined as in a previous job I worked in the DR Congo. Looking to buy a Fairphone when this one breaks so £400ish

abstractzebra · 31/03/2020 17:39

I like my O2 contract because once the phone is paid for (interest free and reduced price), the monthly price goes down and if you then go onto a different sim only contract and then need a phone, you just add it back on.
I'm going to try and get at least another year out of this phone (3 in total), but maybe more if it's ok.

TheDogsMother · 31/03/2020 17:49

Every two or three years and I sell the old one on eBay. I buy outright from Apple, not the very latest model but the one previous to that and have SIM only.

wanderings · 31/03/2020 17:52

I just love squeezing every bit of life I can out of gadgets. My iPhone SE is cracked, and the battery runs out quickly, but it still does the job; so I am not surrendering it just yet! I would prefer a bigger one though.

1066vegan · 31/03/2020 18:03

I had my last one about 4 or 5 years. I got rid of it because it packed up.

I've had my current one about a year. I bought it outright for £330. If it last for 5 years (and I'm hoping it will last longer than that), then it would work out £5.50 per month.

I have a SIM only deal which is £3.99 a month so in total it should work out at £9.49 a month.

bigbluebus · 31/03/2020 18:13

When it breaks down. This phone is over 3 years old. It was on a 2 year contract at £17pm with BT. When the contract ended i switched to SIM only at £6pm although I've now increased that to £7 to get more data for the 2 occasions a year when i might be somewhere without wifi.

fussychica · 31/03/2020 18:18

Never I just have the the one that DS or DH is replacing. I only use it for Whatsapp and music really so don't need anything fancy. I rarely take it out with me as I don't have dataShock

Toomanycats99 · 31/03/2020 18:21

I'd say ever 3 years but generally they then get handed down. My daughter had my 6 and she will get my 8 in another year or so to replace her 6s (the 6 was just knackered!)

I will then probably save the 6s for her little sister to have as her first phone.

YgritteSnow · 31/03/2020 18:22

Only when the old one is on its last breath. Cracked screen or battery no longer charging etc. iPhones don't have a lengthy life span ime. The longest I ever had one was three years. Shocking really work you consider the price.

megletthesecond · 31/03/2020 18:23

When the old one breaks / gives up. Probably every 3 years.

AdoptedBumpkin · 31/03/2020 18:23

I've had my current one for 2 years. Previous one actually kept for about 5 years.

BertieBotts · 31/03/2020 18:24

When it breaks or the battery life becomes intolerable. Works out as once every 2-4 years. I tend to spend about £200 on a phone.

BearSoFair · 31/03/2020 19:17

Every couple of years usually, whenever the one I have starts to get a bit too slow to keep using. Actually only replaced my phone last month as it goes, never on contract so £220. I don't need a high spec phone. Old one hasn't been chucked, it's in a drawer as an emergency spare if needed.

MikeUniformMike · 31/03/2020 19:26

I've got a few old ones.
I buy ones that cost about £10 and use them until they die.
Friends find it amusing and colleagues stand around to laugh admire.
It doesn't do much, but it does texting and phone calls and it lasts for ages without charging. If I drop it or something, it usually survives.

feelinguseless101 · 31/03/2020 19:30

Probably every 3-4 years. I buy one, break or drop it in the loo and then my next one is usually DHs cast off (he buys good, expensive tech phones). My contract is £13 per month but I always buy my phone's outright, usually around £200. I'm not big in to brands, more about functionality.

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2020 19:34

I'm glad I'm not the only one who only changes mine when it breaks or when I drop it down the loo Grin

lachy · 31/03/2020 19:43

I spend about £25.00 on a contract.

I've currently got a Samsung S10, which I've had about 6 months. I keep my phones for about 2-3 years, and so far I've part exchanged all my previous Samsung phones for a new one (this is my third Samsung)

I try and keep them in near perfect condition. They are always in cases, and have screen protectors, which helps with the trade in price!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 31/03/2020 19:55

Current Motorola was £100 outright then SIM card is £11/mth. I don't like to buy on contract because I see it as a debt and like to be free of debt.

TreacherousPissFlap · 31/03/2020 23:36

Every two years as soon as the contract is up.
DH, DS and I all have modern phones and use them all the time. However once we've added insurance and whatnot on to the account, it's now a fraction over £200 a month which is utterly bonkers.
I currently have the iPhone X which I love, but mine is the main contract and we gift data from my plan to the others. Once my contract is up I'm not sure what we will do, but I have no intention of spending so much in the future.

Deadringer · 01/04/2020 00:46

Never. Dh upgrades every year and passes his old one on to me.
