Why has my dishwasher started doing this?

Apologies in advance for the very, very boring thread topic.

My dishwasher keeps not rinsing properly. Whenever I unload it there are always two or three glasses or cups that have that crusted, crud on the inside. It only happens to stuff on the top shelf and seems to only affect the thing at either end. The stuff in the middle is always clean.

It’s less than three years old and is a good brand - it was quite expensive. I’ve run it on a cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner twice, it’s all topped up with rinse aid and salt. I even pulled it out and checked the pipes at the back to make sure there’s nothing wrong there. I rinse off the really mucky things first, too.

Tonight it fucking did it again! Crusty cups and glasses. So annoying. It’s right up there in the top ten of first world problems, I know, but it’s driving me mad. And I’m wasting water washing everything twice. Any tips or anything I haven’t thought of to try?

Have you removed and cleaned out the filter and the removed and cleaned the rotor arms?

RUOKHon · 30/03/2020 00:20

Yes to filter but no to rotor arms. I didn’t even know I could do that. Will give it a go tomorrow!

I found mine did this if I ran it on “eco” setting each time. I run one hot wash a week and clean the filters/arms weekly and it’s fine.

Oh also - DH has a particular protein shake that makes it worse, so rinse them off first

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 30/03/2020 05:07

The last one I had (Bosch) used to do this and it meant the arms needed washing out and unpicking with a paper clip. If the rinse holes on the arms are a bit too big then stuff gets caught in there regularly- I would sometimes find bits of plastic, melon seeds and all sorts of other yuck in them. My current one ( Hotpoint) doesn’t have this problem!

BlueCowWonders · 30/03/2020 05:38

Like Wavingnotdrown1ng my Bosch's arms regularly get clogged it cant cope with rice Hmm as a single grain is just the right size to block an outlet

It's v satisfying to lever out gunk from the dishwasher arms Grin

If you're in a hard water area, it could also need descaling. I tend to chuck some citric acid into mine once a week or so, which seems to help.

MaidenMotherCrone · 30/03/2020 06:27

My Bosch does this too.

RUOKHon · 30/03/2020 07:28

Mine’s a Bosch! This is amazing advice. I love MN. How might I go about detaching my rotor arms so I can clean them?

Mine just twist off.

It's because the rotor arms only spin properly if water can run through all the holes so just unblock holes the best you can and run water through it.

Avoid dishwashing stuff with mashed potato on. Good luck 🙂

StarlightLady · 30/03/2020 07:36

The arms should just lift off. You can find citric acid available in powdee form on line. Alternatively, prporiety dish washer cleaners are available in supermarkets.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/03/2020 07:37

Do more hot washes than cooler ones, keeps all the pipes in good order bit like a washing machine.

blueskys72 · 30/03/2020 07:39

Have you got rinse aid in it?

cobwebsoncornices · 30/03/2020 07:54

The Bosch website has got quite a lot of info on it about what to do. Perhaps it's a common issue! There's a float thing in there somewhere which I had to adjust too.

RUOKHon · 30/03/2020 08:57

Just did the rotor arms. Four if the holes were blocked. That was so satisfying! Thanks all.
