Help!!! DD screaming in pain!

Needhelpp · 29/03/2020 23:08

My DD (aged 3) is in agony with what she is saying is pins and needles in her feet! I’ve been rubbing both feet for around 15 minutes and she’s crying as soon as I stop. She keeps trying to doze off but being woken by the pain.

Can anyone help? Any advice? Thanks!

Give her calpol and raise her feet with a pillow, apply a hot water bottle maybe

SquishySquirmy · 29/03/2020 23:16

How long has she had them for?
Has she tried moving her feet around, shaking them etc?
Pins and needles are very normal, but I have never experienced them lasting that long!
I hope someone with more medical expertise is able to advise, but I'd probably ring NHS 24 in your position (I know they will be super busy) or try the online NHS 24?

Wipe down with a cool flannel, I get it when I've had a hot bath before bed

Hand foot and mouth? Look for blisters

Holymolymackerel · 29/03/2020 23:27

I agree avebury. My daughter had this before the blisters came out, she couldn't walk it hurt so much. My dd said it was like walking on pins.

Needhelpp · 29/03/2020 23:35

35 minutes, constant foot rubbing and a dose of Calpol later, she said the pain is gone. She was genuinely in agony with it! I didn’t see any blisters (I did a quick check over incase there were any rashes or anything because of how much pain she was in). I’ll keep an eye out incase they appear.

Oh, and propping then up on pillows while I rubbed them seemed to help. Thanks all! I’m just hoping it doesn’t happen again 🙏🏼

Check her toes. We had to take our daughter to A&E as a baby due to a hair wrapped tightly around her toe. I never would have noticed - lucky my husband did

Couchbettato · 29/03/2020 23:37

Not going to diagnose your daughter but I have Raynaud's and as a kid I used to complain about "fizzy feet". I didn't know what pins and needles were. My skin didn't change colour until I was a lot older but if I've not been wearing socks, when I lay flat my feet get pins and needles so bad it hurts until they've warmed up.

goldfinchfan · 29/03/2020 23:42

This might sound daft but you can try a footbath with epsom salts.

It is very soothing

OhioOhioOhio · 29/03/2020 23:45

We've had this. Growing pains. Calpol.

Bookoffacts · 29/03/2020 23:54

I'm glad your DD is feeling better

I used to get what I called "leggy pains' as a child. Just as described, excruciating, (as bad as childbirth), floods of tears and unable to walk. Still not sure what it was, I think it was growing pains but I have since heard that they don't exist.

Hot water bottle and paracetamol helped. My mum, god rest her, used to wait up with me for hours through it. Firm massage / foot rub helped a lot.
It was made worse with long walks in the day - would appear those evenings.
I believe I was taken to doc who dismissed it as part of growing up but this was in the 1970s.

My daughter has similar pain with plantar fasciitis. She had been playing barefoot for most of the day last summer and when she went to bed that night the pain was unbearable for her. I had to constantly rub her feet, any time I let up in pressure she would start screaming again. As long as she wears shoes/slippers with an insole now shes fine but was very scary the first time. Theres a lot of good tutorials on youtube for plantar fasciitis massages which helped. I get it too if I'm running too much, but dont get the same symptoms as my daughter does

Hand foot and mouth? Look for blisters

That was my thought. My friend had it a month ago. Did not think humans could get it. I now know they can!

MitziK · 30/03/2020 13:22

Hand, Foot and Mouth is completely different to Foot and Mouth Disease.

willowpatterns · 30/03/2020 13:27

@Bookoffacts Growing pains do indeed exist. It's when the bones are growing more quickly that the muscles and tendon, and it hurts until they catch up. According to consultant paediatrician we saw re dd's hypermobility.

Fuss · 30/03/2020 13:29

I also had this as a child. I was eventually diagnosed with hyper mobility syndrome at 40.
Dr's repeatedly told my Mum I had growing pains. The pain in my knee joints could be so excruciating at night I'd tie my dressing gown cord tight around my thigh to stop the pain. Stupid I realise now, but at the time it was the only thing that helped.

Needhelpp · 30/03/2020 16:54

@Fuss that’s interesting. DD has previously been in agony in the night with knee pain also and complains of tired legs more often than I’d expect. I took her to the GP who wasn’t helpful at all. Just asked her to jump which she could obviously do.

My dcs had terrible growing pains! Mostly between the ages of 3-5. It's scary, they would scream in agony!

My doctor sent them both for blood tests it was so bad! Nothing untoward found and a few years later and they've stopped completely.

Don't know if it's relevant, but is she tall for her age? My dcs are on high centiles (91st and 98th) for height.

Ginkypig · 30/03/2020 18:31

That's funny couchbettato I also didn't have the correct language as a young child and I used to describe the extreme pins and needles or tingling as a "very bad minty feeling mummy" this was before I had outward symptoms that doctors or parents could see.

I was diagnosed later with an extreme form of general raynauds which still has disabling effects on me now.
