Can I use plain flour+baking power instead of self-raising?

Forgot to get self-raising flour. Not going back out for one item. Anyone used plain plus baking powder and if so, how much?

Yes, many times - there should be details on the baking powder packet :)

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 28/03/2020 17:37

can't believe I didn't think to look.
Thank you!

Yes you can. I think it's about 2 level teaspoons of baking powder to 150 gym plain flour. Don't overdo it though as you can sometimes taste it especially in scones.

Grams of plain flour, not gym!

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2020 17:39

Yes - baking powder though, not baking soda. (Just in case anyone reads the thread who might not realise they're different things)

Self raising is essentially just plain flour with the right amount of baking powder premixed into it.

ADreamOfGood · 28/03/2020 17:39

Yes- it's half teaspoon baking powder and half a teaspoon of bicarb for 100g of flour

woodencoffeetable · 28/03/2020 17:40

yes, look at the dosing of baking powder on the pack, it differs slightly from brand to brand.
and add slightly more salt.

ADreamOfGood · 28/03/2020 17:40

Are you making a microwave sponge?

SoupDragon · 28/03/2020 17:40

I never buy SR flour any more.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 28/03/2020 17:45

thanks all.
I don't know what I'm making yet - have a well-stocked baking cupboard other than SRF so just weighing up my options Smile.

I'm about to do microwave syrup sponge with no SR flour... so looked up the amounts earlier.

hopefulhalf · 28/03/2020 18:13

Yes

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 28/03/2020 19:19

Cheers all!

@ADreamOfGood
Microwave syrup sponge?? Would you mind posting your recipe for that?
I can't believe I could possibly be tucking into a homemade syrup sponge in a matter of minutes! Grin

My son has just asked this question! He's made us microwave chocolate puddings - very nice.

ADreamOfGood · 28/03/2020 23:02

So sorry! It was taken from this thread

It went down v well this evening!

ADreamOfGood · 28/03/2020 23:03

50g SR Flour
50g caster sugar
50g butter
1 egg
2 tbsp milk

Then 2 tbsp syrup in the bottom of the bowl, mixture over the top, and nuke for 3 minutes with a dinner plate over the bowl

PickAChew · 28/03/2020 23:05

Self raising is reappearing, btw. I got some in our tesco metro, yesterday, after not being able to get any since before the panic buying even started.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 28/03/2020 23:10

Flour? Flour??? Can I substitute gold-dust? That's easier to find right now! Grin

ADreamOfGood · 28/03/2020 23:17

Um, I used rather elderly plain 00 flour and added baking powder and bicarb @MysteriesOfTheOrganism !
