How much screen time are your dc's getting?

Loobieloo27 · 28/03/2020 16:55

Just that really.

I'm really struggling to fill the days with no screens. My 8yo ds seems to only want to play console which generally I manage strictly but in these times I'm not sure if I should relax a bit.

For us it's important we get exercise with Joe wick or play in the garden, some school work and play but that doesn't fill a day. They watch the occasional film but prefer YouTube/console. Thanks Flowers

Absolutely loads, but interspersed with bike rides/dog walks/football in the garden etc to try to even it out a bit!

MarieQueenofScots · 28/03/2020 19:54

Loads but she’s doing a “normal” day at school remotely on her school laptop!

I heard on Woman's Hour today we should chill the fuck out about screen time during this deeply weird time. Things are stressful enough without worrying about our usual parenting 'standards'.

Mumista · 28/03/2020 19:58

Loads today; less during the week when they are following a school schedule (which still involves screens, just for less time than today's extravaganza!)

gingerninja99 · 28/03/2020 19:59

Too much but are in isolation so have treated it as a holiday, we are due back to work and school mid next week as key workers so will limit it then and maybe do a little each day of the work school has set.

Smurf123 · 28/03/2020 19:59

Ds was in the garden for a total of 6 hours today (1.5 of that was him napping in the pram) and he still watched 2 movies and a few episodes of mickey mouse so way more than normal but there is only so much activities you can do with a 2 year old and a puppy and they wake up ready to go from 630am. Once lockdown is over we will reduce the screen time back down again.

Namelesswonder · 28/03/2020 20:05

Loads, 12 and 15 year olds- school work online, socialising online, Netflix the rest of the time. Weather rubbish here, wet, cold, foggy even hail stones today so not out much.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/03/2020 20:13

Loads. He's 6 so doesn't really game much but he's watching loads of YouTube and I'm fine with it. We're doing schoolwork, reading and going out for exercise daily.

There's only so much baking/crafting/board games that you can do in one day to be honest.

Duchessofblandings · 28/03/2020 20:16

Tonkerbea

Did you also hear the daft woman suggesting we should all be wearing our taffeta ball gowns and changing our outfits three times a day?

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Or is it just me in tracks?

pfrench · 28/03/2020 20:20

Loads. 2 adults working from home, both with heavy work weeks. We've been more realistic in our expectations for next week. But, this meant child watched loads of telly, and loads of art instruction videos etc. She also spent loads of time in the garden. Ah well, it's not forever, hopefully.

Oblomov20 · 28/03/2020 20:46

Practically the whole time, in between an hour of schoolwork, eating, watching you tube videos, x boxing with mates, making loo roll challenge videos.

PontiacBandit · 28/03/2020 20:50

All the screen time, for me and DH too. It's not the end of world imo.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2020 20:55

Loads. Although the good weather has helped massively this week.
We’ve spent a lot of time in the garden, a bit of time doing PE, running a daily ‘mile’ in the garden, some spellings and working through a project, all the rest of it.
But we subscribed to Disney life or whatever it’s called this week and they’ve found films on there to watch, dds have been set all their schoolwork online so they’ve spent a fair bit on their laptops, ds has had more iPad time than he usually does but during the ‘week’ I’ve kept him away from it until around 4/5pm.
But still, loads more than usual. And I don’t give a shit to be honest, we are all doing the best we can.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/03/2020 20:55

My 14 yo dd probably more than usual.

Today she was on her phone 10.30am until nearly midday, then she made pancakes for both of us, then did some maths work.

This afternoon she read for a couple of hours and then we went for a long walk.

Got home about 5pm and been either on her phone or watching telly ever since 🤷‍♀️

velocitygirl7 · 28/03/2020 20:59

Two words.
Shit loads....

MerryDeath · 28/03/2020 21:01

we've actually done REALLY well this week. tv has hardly been on. mainly cos DH has been here so child has been very busy 'helping' him. next week he's away and it's me, DS and the baby, all week. no friends, no family, no farm, no zoo. just us, the tv and one walk a day. f.m.l. 😫

TwistinMyMelon · 28/03/2020 21:04

I think there are more important things to be worrying about than screen time right now to be honest. As long as my daughter is healthy and happy that's all I care about.

Tonkerbea · 28/03/2020 21:07

@Duchessofblandings

I only wear elasticated waistbands now 😂

tempnamechange98765 · 28/03/2020 21:14

Definitely more than normal. DS is 4 and in nursery mornings only, but 2 full days of wraparound childcare, and in the week he usually doesn't have TV until at least 4pm, or maybe 20-30 minutes after lunch and no more through the day until 4pm.

We are trying to restrict it in the week still but we're putting Joe Wicks on for PE 9-9:30 (although he doesn't really concentrate on this) then when DC2 naps late morning DS1 will watch 30 minutes to an hour. Trying to then not have it on again until 4pm, which has been ok the last week as DH hasn't had to do much work from home yet and I'm off Monday and Friday anyway. Plus the weather has been nice so we've had our one walk a day and plenty of garden/trampoline time. It's still more than I'd like though.

Today with it being the weekend and nothing else to do outside of the house except our walk (he usually has Rugby Tots, and we go out and do something else) he's had more, a good hour this morning after breakfast and then it went on again 4pm until later than usual bedtime at 6:30pm (he did have tea in between this but the film he was watching was just paused).

DelurkingAJ · 28/03/2020 21:51

Probably about normal as DS1 has been a star and knuckles down to the worksheets etc that his primary have sent. I know they watch some TV at the childminder’s whilst she cooks them supper and we have it on for the same purpose now. Has used EducationCity but he also uses screens at school and it’s a 45 minute slot each day. DH and I are both FT but have managed to tag team this week. I suspect it will all go downhill later on...but DS1 doesn’t game online so there’s no social element as far as he’s concerned (other than two-player with DH on the Switch which is normal for us (30 minutes in the evening). If he were 9 and not 7 I suspect it would be a lot more so he could chat to friends.

fireflower998 · 28/03/2020 21:54

shit loads

Lifeisabeach09 · 28/03/2020 21:55

Loads. Sings and dances on her tablet mainly so I consider it great for her fitness and mental health (as well as mine in terms of the latter).

AlpacaGoodnight · 28/03/2020 21:58

Too much but I'm not going to worry about it at the moment!

Loobieloo27 · 28/03/2020 22:20

I definately don't aim for no screens, my two dc's spend a lot of time on tablets/TV and xbox for the oldest but it seems the more they have the more they want it and are 'soooooo bored' without it.

They do there school work and the Joe wicks workout too.
