Constipated DS, please help (not the poo troll!)

DS is 7 and has bad constipation. He had it about a year ago and was treated by the GP; now the same thing has happened again. He's been prescribed Movicol, but due to the current crisis the pharmacist won't have it until Monday. I've got cold symptoms so we're self-isolating and I won't go out, just in case. I doubt it's coronavirus but you never know.

My question: is there anything we might have in the house that I could give him in the meantime? I've got some dates here, he hates them but I suppose I could try chopping them up and mixing them with jam? What other foods might help that I've forgotten? Please help!

Plenty of water should be on the top of this list . then yes dates will help as will most other fruit , can you mix it with porridge/ rice pudding .

Sweet corn has the err desired affect on me too Blush

Lots of water, organic apple juice diluted, porridge with water. Sending a hug. If the pharmacist has the adult version they may be able to recommend using the adult version (at a much lower dose).... I’m sure others will have other suggestions. Sending best.

I've got some tinned corn which he loves, I'll give that a go. He drinks lots of water, which is why it's so odd that this happens to him (unlike my other DS who constantly has to be nagged to drink water). He eats plenty of fruit but I'll chop up an apple for him anyway.

Poor kid, he's really struggling today.

Where are you? I have a box of unopened movicol which ds was prescribed and didn’t take (dr prescribed and then consultant disagreed).

nowmorethanever · 28/03/2020 15:49

How kind are you @lovelydovey! I just bit the bullet and rang an acquaintance who's not too far away, she very generously agreed to pop to Boots for me so we may have a short-term solution! In the meantime I tempted DS with some tinned corn weirdo.

I thought paediatric movicol was prescription only?

KnittingSister · 28/03/2020 17:31

Try 250 ml orange juice and 250 ml water, down in one, works for me a treat!

nowmorethanever · 28/03/2020 21:01

@lovelydovey yes I think it is, we have something called Iberolax here that’s safe for children and fairly similar. So that will hopefully tide us over. He’s having trouble sleeping, poor love, but hopefully will have some relief tomorrow.

No juice in the house unfortunately and no shopping for me with my symptoms Sad

Amazon pantry for juice?

Sexnotgender · 28/03/2020 21:11

Lentils if you have any.

nowmorethanever · 28/03/2020 21:24

Good idea slippery, but by the time it gets here the script will be ready anyway. I might order some with my food delivery that’s coming Monday night though.

I’ve got lentils! Smile

Is he impacted the other end? I've self administered 'lube' before to help things out. Not sure if/how/whether you should attempt that with a child though, probably not. Glycerine suppositories from Boots?

nowmorethanever · 28/03/2020 21:59

We have some prescription suppositories and used one earlier in the week which helped, but unfortunately it seems that the problem goes right through the system.

Hopefully the Iberolax will start to help tomorrow though. He’s finally fallen asleep, so we’ll see how it goes.

Chia seeds if you have any, you can just mix in with some yoghurt, have always helped me. Hope he feels better soon.
