Bread maker help - bit like sponge cake!

I made some white bread in my bread maker yesterday, the ingredients were flour, milk, oil, salt, sugar and yeast.

It came out a bit like a sponge cake. Way too sweet.

I followed the recipe in the manual.

Any tips to make it nicer please? Can I do water? Can I cut the sugar?

Also, just to add I only have a certain amount of flour and don't want to waste it by experimenting.

750 gm loaf in basic white bread setting
3.5 cup flour
1.5 cup butter milk
1 tsp salt
1tbsp sugar (I use about half as otherwise it is too sweet)
2 tbsp butter
1 sachet yeast
So far it has never failed me and works fine with both strong and all purpose flour

Thank you, but I'm not sure how easily I can get hold of buttermilk.

Add a little vinegar to milk or do ordinary milk or even the dry milk powder with water. I have used all the above, even just water on occasion but milk seems to make it a softer bread.

I made it without powdered milk btw in my Lidl bread maker on the basic setting - works fine .

3/4tsp yeast, 400g flour, 15g butter, 1tsp each of salt and sugar and 270ml lukewarm water.
In my bread machine it takes 4 hours to produce a prefect medium size light crust loaf. Hasn't failed yet!

Btw before I discovered that recipe my first load was like a sponge cake. Horrible as bread but delicious when I turned it into bread and butter pudding!

I make bread all the time

500g strong bread flour
10g dried yeast
10g salt
30g soft (melted) unsalted butter
320ml tepid water (you may need a bit more depends on the mix)

Mix together
Knead
Prove for 1hr+ until doubled in size
Knock back & knead again
Put into loaf tin & leave to rise for 1 hr
Bake at 220C

Don't use milk in bread it will make a sweeter different bread eg I use it in chelsea bun mixture.
