Sudden allergy symptoms - but to what?!

MortyFide · 27/03/2020 13:40

I'm not really an "allergy" person, I rarely react to anything other than some skin creams, make-up and antibiotics - I have never suffered from hay-fever or allergies to pets or anything, I'm very fortunate.

But in the last few days I have developed a very red, itchy, sore eye (just the one) a constantly runny nose (it's gone red and scabby like I have a cold), I'm sneezing a few times a day and I've actually got itching in my MOUTH! Shock I'm finding myself trying to scratch my itchy throat with my tongue.

It's only just struck me - that's allergic rhinitis isn't it?! Bit weird, never had it before - and the only thing new in the house IS THE NEW PUPPY.

But he's a border terrier - a) they are supposed to be one of the least allergenic breeds out there, and b) I had a patterdale terrier for 12 years before him with the exact same wiry coat, and I never had any symptoms to her.

Can you develop an allergy like that out of the blue? The house was dog free for about 3 months. Wracking my brains to think what else it could be...the puppy has a new fleece blanket and bed, but they're only acrylic. Nothing else has changed...

Unfortunately there’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.
And I suspect the puppy coat is not like the adult one.
Were there other breeds where you picked the pup up from? Did you bring anything home (like a blanket) with pup?

fiddlethefiddles · 27/03/2020 13:47

Do antihistamines help at all?

Wolfiefan · 27/03/2020 13:48

BTW I’m having problems at the moment because I’m stuck in the house more and we have the central heating on.

Tree pollen for me get it this time every year.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 27/03/2020 14:26

Maybe you have developed hayfever. Apparently more and more people are suffering with it even though they never have in the past.

Forza14 · 27/03/2020 14:29

You can become allergic to something out of the blue.

The pollen count is apparently very high this year, so it may be that. Or it may be the puppy.

Have you got any antihistamines?

MortyFide · 27/03/2020 17:45

Picked up some antihistamines earlier, will give them a try. They worked a treat when I had a terrible reaction to bed bugs a couple of years ago, would you believe.

No Wolfie there was only the parent borders there - he did come home with a blanket and a toy, but blanket was new out of the bag and the toy smelt terrible so I chucked it after he'd settled in and didn't need their scent anymore.

I wondered about tree pollen but since the symptoms vanished when I went out for my walk with him this afternoon, but I have an itchy mouth and sneezy/runny nose again having had him on my lap for 2 mins - and now he's dashing around his pen like a loony next to where I'm sitting - I am suspecting him! Maybe his puppy coat or dander?

Blimey I've never been allergic before, not that I've noticed. Hopefully it'll fade as he gets older.

You can develop (and loose) allergies.

sar302 · 27/03/2020 17:56

Look up oral allergy syndrome. It is linked to hay fever through pollination. Itchy mouth / lips / throat is a classic symptom.

MortyFide · 27/03/2020 18:39

According to some blurb on oral allergy syndrome, you get symptoms after eating something though (and my goddaughter certainly has this, to certain fruits and nuts)? All I've had today is a couple of bits of toast with butter.

I don't know how one itchy eye and a runny tickly schnozz (it's not stuffy at all, just runny and tickly) relates to the inside of my mouth itching, but there's something going on. I do kiss the dog (he's a puppy, of course I do) so maybe something is getting in my mouth.

He is the common denominator, I haven't had this before. Unless I've developed an allergy to tree pollen out of nowhere I guess!

Stop kissing the dog as there will be many allergens in his fur

pinkpolo · 27/03/2020 23:01

I'm always bad this time of year due to tree pollen. It started about a week ago for me so I've been taking antihistamines once a day, and will do until June (hopefully)

Moonbaby321 · 27/03/2020 23:09

Border Terriers are fantastic dogs (I have one!) Smile
Congratulations on your new pup!
I have heard a lot of people complaining of hay fever this week, I only ever get it once a year in Spring so it must be a specific pollen that brings me out in it. I got a device called an Allergy Reliever from Lloyds chemist. It's a little infa red device you put up your nose (glamourous) and you can use it on it's own or with anti histamines. You can use it as often as you like but it basically makes your brain block histamines (or something!) and it works amazingly well. Check the reviews on their site, there are others on Amazon too.
I am in several BT groups on FB and I've never seen anyone say they were allergic to theirs but I suppose it isn't impossible

LER83 · 27/03/2020 23:42

My mum is allergic to only one of her cats. Can stroke mine and her other one with no problems, but as soon as she touches this particular one her hands start itching etc. She just doesn't touch the cat anymore and hoovers regularly (the cats a miserable sod who doesn't like being touched anyway). Have realised this doesn't solve your problem as doubt you would be able to resist puppy eyes!!

MortyFide · 28/03/2020 04:29

Are you Moonbaby, we're probably on one of the same groups! He's a little smasher, although lack of progress with toilet training is getting me down a bit.

Thanks for the tip about the allergy reliever, will have a look on Amazon.

Pup is in a crate-sized area down beside my side of the bed - he woke us at 4am (and 1am, I'd already taken him for a pee and a poo once) and DH took him out, but obviously not before I'd put my face down to him and fussed him a bit. Within 5 mins both eyes were itching, nose running, and inside of my mouth itching (I didn't kiss him!).

I'm going to take an antihistamine now and see if it works. Thanks LER83, I guess it's not impossible then. Maybe Wolfie is right and it's his puppy coat, if it is him and not the tree or grass pollen on his coat obvs.

MortyFide · 30/03/2020 19:58

I took an antihistamine the night before last, and the symptoms did ease up a bit for 12 hours or so. I was only a bit sneezy and snotty yesterday, eyes weren't so bad - but today my skin has been a bit itchy, and I've just found a very minor bumpy rash on my midriff. Confused

Washing my face I can feel a few bumps on my skin there too.

It's got to be the dog hasn't it? Nothing else in the house has changed, not soap, shampoo, washing powder, fabric softener (and those things don't make you sneeze anyway do they). Only the dog is new...

goose1964 · 30/03/2020 20:29

It could be hay fever my DH suddenly developed it last year. Unfortunately it does sound like the puppy.

MortyFide · 30/03/2020 21:57

I do wonder about new hayfever, but does that cause a skin rash (assuming one has not been rolling around in a field)?

Puppy had a snooze on me for 30 mins earlier - sometimes cuddling him like a baby is the only way to get the little shit to calm down and stop taking lumps out of us, yes I might regret it later but at least he's only a small terrier Grin - and so far symptoms haven't worsened.

If it is the puppy, I guess I'm fortunate that the reaction is mild. Hope it fades as he gets older!

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 30/03/2020 22:02

Hay fever can do that to me. Be thankful your shit is little and do whatever it takes for sleep.
Giant 24 week pup here. Grin

MortyFide · 30/03/2020 22:14

Ohhhh I can't wait for him to be 24 weeks, we're at 12! But yes, at least he is only 3kg at the moment (he'll only be 6-7kg fully grown). We have, mercifully, now had 2 days of him consistently looking at the door when he wants to go out, so we have only had one tiny wee on the carpet today when neither of us noticed that he looked at the door for a nanosecond, and one inexplicably in his bed, which I seem to remember happens at least once in my limited puppy experience!

I have been known to get in his play pen to spare my clothes and ankles when he's on a rampage. Easier than trying to capture and place the tasmanian devil in there by hand.
