Anyone up for joining me in 0-10k running?

Weirdointhecellar · 27/03/2020 06:25

It will be my only time of exercising - but I need to get out of the house. Woke up with anxiety at 4am and forced myself out in the garden for some fresh air and convinced myself to put my trainers on and try a jog it off.

It worked a bit. Mind you it wasn’t far. But I felt better. So I’m downloading the 0-10k app and I’m going to go for it.

I miss my friends. My kids are winding me up. My DH is making me ragey by just breathing. I’ve already been in for three weeks so I’m going to not allow this to swallow me up.

Who fancies it?

Disclaimer - I am NOT a seasoned runner! Far from it. This will kill me!

It’s so irresponsible to be contemplating running long distances during lockdown.

30 mins outdoors max

Weirdointhecellar · 27/03/2020 06:39

Verily is that government guidelines?

Weirdointhecellar · 27/03/2020 06:43

I can’t see anywhere we are limited to 30 minutes. If you’ve got a link that would be great.

Christ, the urge for people to kick others whilst they're down on Mumsnet at the moment is disgusting.
Verily1 There is no 30 min limit to exercise and the guidelines specifically say running is acceptable. Some of us need to exercise for our mental health.

weirdoninthecellar I have to admit I've been contemplating it, but my every attempt at C25k has ended in failure.

Weirdointhecellar · 27/03/2020 06:51

Callar why don’t you reduce it to 10k? And just use it as an excuse to let some steam off.

The reason for me primary is my anxiety, I instantly felt a bit better and if I get fit and burn a bit of blubber off it will a good thing.

Government guidelines say you can go out to exercise once a day as long as you keep 2m or more away from people- so not sure why you are getting flamed op?

Good luck with your running, I hope to do c25k when I'm out of self isolation and feeling better, hopefully it will help with anxiety!

Gotthetshirt23 · 27/03/2020 06:52

I'd love to but have no trainers / running shoes , the pair I have the heels are all broken inside .
Was hoping to try gait testing but that's not going to be possible.
Good Luck !
And yes , get out , no 30mins rule at all .

CallarMorvern · 27/03/2020 06:54

weirdinthecellar - I was meaning couch to 5k (C25k), 😂 25k (or 10k) would bloody kill me!

Weirdointhecellar · 27/03/2020 06:56

The deputy chief medical officer advised us all to do this yesterday, to go out for a run or jog and come out of the end of this healthier than when we went into this. But I’m glad mumsnet posters know better than she does.

Twickerhun · 27/03/2020 07:02

I’m starting c 2 5k from experience I know 10k won’t happen, I need a lower start target

Happynewyear22 · 27/03/2020 07:06

I'm starting c25k this weekend. I dont enjoy running but I've done c25k a few times to lose weight and have a treadmill at home and the time to do it now. I'm having treatment for a long term condition and hope I'll feel better this weekend to start. I didnt know there was a 10k app. Can you tell me what it's called please?.

bulletjournalbilly · 27/03/2020 07:09

I've just completed C25K and now doing Bridge to 10K

It's achievable.

OP download the NHS C25K ... 9 weeks and you'll be ready to start 10K training Smile

bulletjournalbilly · 27/03/2020 07:10

Zenlabs do a 10K app. Not as good as C25K but does the job!

Weirdointhecellar · 27/03/2020 08:07

Thanks for the support guys!

twicker when are you starting?

Does anyone know of any apps where your friends can join in with you or compete or watch each other’s progress?

I was working on my running and had just done my first 10k about 3 weeks ago. I went straight from 5 k parkrun to 10k, paced slowly, about 12/13 minute miles and about 2 mins of walking at mile 4. Did it in about 1hr20. As soon as my kids are at their dad's I'll be going out again to try not to lose the progress I made. Lots of nice rural areas to run through from my door.

HugeAckmansWife · 27/03/2020 08:13

So sorry yes, I'll join you. Also to the pp who said about shoes, I know its not the same but could you order some online? I rate asics personally.

HugeAckmansWife · 27/03/2020 08:13

Strava would be the app to use

Pishposhpashy · 27/03/2020 08:14

Just to say that this isnt the best time to start exercising intensively as it can lower your immune system.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 27/03/2020 08:20

Just make sure you aren’t travelling to start your runs. Start them from your front door. There have been lots of reports of people driving to beauty spots to exercise which is against guidance, though I think that should’ve been made MUCH clearer by the gov in the briefings.

They stated ‘essential travel’ which travelling to exercise is not. You need to exercise but you do not need to travel to do it.

thecatschampagne · 27/03/2020 08:47

@Verily1 there providing a stonking example of the Mumsnet Stasi making up their own rules

I'll join! I was pretty fit from spinning a few times a week, but then I went on honeymoon for three weeks and came back to find all of my gyms shut so I'm running! Completed week 1 of C25K yesterday and it's amazing the ache in my legs!

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/03/2020 08:49

They've just made it very clear on the BBC that nobody can travel to get to a place to do their exercise. You do it from your front door.

LimpidPools · 27/03/2020 10:12

Walking 5 minutes warm up, followed by up to 30 minutes of running (on a non-installed path if possible - easier on the joints), followed by a 5 minute walk home is pretty efficient and effective.

That's c25k. It's ideal for starting and finishing from your front door. Too much risk of twisting an ankle in woodland!

10k is too hard for me to contemplate at the moment Grin

motorcyclenumptiness · 27/03/2020 10:35

Thanks for the kick up the bum, OP. Running (albeit at the speed of lard) is my go-to mood-improver. Right now I could cheerfully drop-kick every member of my family through a wind turbine so I need all the mood-improvement help I can getGrin

cocomelon23 · 27/03/2020 10:48

I thought it waant recommended to take up running now if you hadn't run before? I'm sure it was mentioned on a thread recently. For reasons like it will lower your immune system, the strain it puts on your heart if you're overweight etc.
