Anyone up and want to help me to find some different textures of fabric on Amazon?

I’m trying to adopt a game of twister to make it sensory friendly… And also easy to play if you can’t see… I’m only looking for small pieces of fabric, just enough so that I can put on each circle. Also, how do you think I should attach the material? I’m thinking of something like velvet, silk, and I need some ideas for the rest… I think there are five colors, right?

4 colours, 6 circles of each colour.

How about fleece?

ArriettyJones · 27/03/2020 02:01

Suede, corduroy & chenille?

ArriettyJones · 27/03/2020 02:03

Actually the three I’ve just said -suede corduroy and chenille - are fairly thick and comparatively hard wearing add velvet to that and you have four distinct thickish fabrics. Silk might be too delicate for multiple games.

Can you just glue them on in squares or circles to a large sheet? Or use wonder web with an iron?

The layout of the play mat is

AAAAAA
BBBBBB
CCCCCC
DDDDDD

And then the little spinner that you use to play has ABCD repeating round the dial four times.

Please don't use Amazon. Utter cunts.

Tbh I've ignored things I heard about them over the years, I knew they were morally bankrupt but used then as they were convenient and I was skint.

But their response to the crisis is unreal. eg Packets of crisps for £17.

And now this:

‘Petrified’ Amazon workers left in ‘300 Strong Crowds’
24 Mar 2020

Amazon workers are ‘petrified’ of being infected by COVID-19 after being left to work in packed warehouses, without hand sanitiser or personal protection equipment.

People at fulfilment centres across the UK report being left in crowds of 200-300 people and having to reuse equipment multiple times with no hand sanitiser available.

Workers say water dispensers are used over and over again without being disinfected, dirty canteen tables with used tissues on them, team leaders giving feedback without staying two metres away and no sanitiser or alcohol wipes to clean equipment.

Mick Rix, GMB National Officer, said:

“We are so angry about this - these workers are petrified of catching and spreading COVID-19 and rightly so.

“Amazon is blatantly disregarding the two metre social distancing rules, there are no masks, no sanitiser and with the vast amount of people working there there’s no way of keeping them from getting ill.

“It’s impossible for Amazon workers to keep a safe distance from each other and hit their productivity targets.

“Amazon has a duty of care - not just to its own workers but to the whole of the British public."

Sorry, lovely idea to make twister.

What about a fat quarter bundle? (Is that big enough for twister?)

Here's a velvet fat quarter bundle on etsy: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/543022512/velvet-fabric-pieces-bundle

In case it's useful to anyone: what is a fat bundle

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 27/03/2020 02:26

Silk sold by weight here. I wonder how much silk 100g looks like?

ArriettyJones · 27/03/2020 02:27

A fat quarter would be the perfect size for a hand or foot.

eBay will sell them too.

Doggodogington · 27/03/2020 02:29

Velcro?

Hellokittymania · 27/03/2020 02:40

Thank you for the ideas, and I had no idea what a fat quarter bundle was. Trying to think of Visually impaired and sensory friendly games that involve movement… Having to adapt some things.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 27/03/2020 03:06

Oops that should say "what is a fat QUARTER!" (No idea how the bundle slipped in!)

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 27/03/2020 03:10

You could risk it and just buy some mixed remnants eg www.ebay.co.uk/p/1386771654?iid=162215809260

They're not expensive. I guess you could contact the seller in advance and ask if they can do a selection with different textures for you.

PathOfLeastResitance · 27/03/2020 08:50

Fake fur.
Minky.
Hessian.
Net - you could bundle this up and not lay it flat. I’d probably do the same with the silk so it was in soft folds.
Brocade.
Felt.
Foam.
I’ve made sensory pillows before and these worked well. A couple have essential oils in but you just need to be aware of allergies.
I have one with marabou attached - some love it and some hate it. Adding trimmings with buttons, ribbon, ric rac and braid can work well.
Show us when you’re done! Mine are at work so can’t show you mine.

thingywotsit · 27/03/2020 09:06

What about non fabric type materials such as fake grass, sticky back plastic, bubble wrap, foil thermal blankets? Particularly fond of the foil blankets when it comes to a sensory box!

MaidenMotherCrone · 27/03/2020 09:12

A fat quarter is 50cm x 50cm.

The bundles are all the same fabric type ( usually cotton). For quilting!

Could you use old clothes/ bedding?

Towel, blanket, cushion covers.

Coats, scarves, jumpers etc
