Cleaning a Toilet

I know, please don't flame me for this, but I recently moved out of a hostel to my own place and I would like to clean the toilet properly and am unsure how to (it is very, very important to me that I look after my home having come from the hostel).

The toilet has sort of browny grey layer around the base of the bowl (by the water line), the rest of it I have managed to get clean to white again.

Cannot for the life of me get this layer off though - does anyone please have any tips or suggestions of things I can try? I have tried vanish, bleach, dettol so far.

I feel really thick asking but it is starting to really frustrate me.

You need a heavy duty limescale remover which you can buy in supermarkets and wilko

@HappyHammy Thank you very much. I did wonder if it was limescale but it looks different to the kettle version!

It is likely limescale. It can build up even in places without hard water if not kept on top of. Harpic do tablets that you can leave in the toilet overnight that really shift it, and also do a limescale removing cleaner.

You will be amazed at how quickly you can shift it with the right stuff! Good luck.

For a cheap solution, you can try a couple of tubes of denture cleaning tablets. Shove them down and leave for as long as you can. Works a treat! Good luck in your new home OP, I hope you'll be really happy there Smile

Ask at a hardware store. DH bought some stuff that was dynamite. Literally foamed up and destroyed the limescale. He needed Hazmat gear!

I second the denture tabs or sterilizing granules for wine making stuff it's about £2.50 from Wilkos, desolve some in hot water, get rid of as much water as possible in the loo bowl and pour , slightly cooled ( you don't want to crack the toilet ! ) solution in . Leave for as long as possible, pref over night.
Good luck in your new home , I bet it feels great to have your own place

Oh and if you need oven cleaner Lakeland's own is the best imo.

Thank you so much everyone! I have ordered denture tabs and limescale descaler thing. I have another question - do I have to do these regularly (I am trying to use eco things only); I am worried about the chemicals if I do have to. Also, is there a way to prevent it building up?

Thanks for the tip @AlCalavicci on the Lakeland cleaner - I am actually already using their surface wipe (Euclyptus one) and absolutely love it!
