Starlink satellites passing wst to east right now

I just had the wonderful experience of counting 18 of what I think are the Starlink satellites. I'm in SW England and they were still coming but I had to come in. If you are interested pop outside and see if you can see them.

They look like bright stars and will be moving very fast across the sky. In strict formation all following each other like a row of ducklings.

Either that or I am alerting the world to the coming of our alien overlords..

A gap of what maybe about 10 seconds inbetween each one.

I saw them! Or some at least. Amazing. Do you know what the really bright star in the west was at all? The brightest thing in the sky here, also in SW.

blackteaplease · 25/03/2020 20:39

I missed these but saw the ISS. Wasn't the really bright one in the west Venus?

DarkPassenger · 25/03/2020 20:41

IAmcuriousyellow That is Venus. It looks absolutely stunning tonight.

We saw Venus last night, thought it was a plane coming in to land it was so bright!

My daughter was just falling asleep when I read this so I told her and we raced outside. She's 7 and LOVES all things space related. We are in the south of England and sadly couldn't spot them but the stars were beautiful tonight!

LinesmanMinnelli · 25/03/2020 20:45

I saw them a few weeks ago at about 5 am and they completely freaked me out as I had no idea what they were!

DarkPassenger · 25/03/2020 20:46

Thanks for the reminder blackteaplease. I saw what I hoped was the ISS (I always wave Blush ) but meant to check when I got back in. 7.39pm matches the time I saw it perfectly.

Lots of other much smaller ones visible too mostly going N to S for me.

Smaller satellites that is, not smaller ISSs, unless the Gov.s are not telling us something Grin

@Lifesabeach86 - if you get the chance one quiet night then just sit or lie outside and you both should be able to see 'everyday' satellites travelling in all directions. Once you get an eye for spotting them you will become very good at it. They vary from what look like tiny stars to the very bright obvious ones. The brightness comes from the sun reflecting on their solar panels and they can disappear in the blink of an eye as the line is broken between them and the sun.

They travel on one line so even if you lose sight of one you can catch it again by looking further along it's path of travel.

I love it. To be fair I mostly see them when I pop out for a smoke but my personal best count, until tonight!, was 8 in about 10 minutes.

Along with the 18 Starlinks I saw 5 others on various trajectories so I think it is going to take me a while to beat my new personal best!

I've never seen the starlinks.
For anyone who is interested this link will tell you when you can spot the ISS. Just enter your location.
