What are you reading at the moment?

I'm reading Simon Reeves' autobiography, I've long enjoyed his tv programmes but seeing what he has achieved given his difficult background and teenage years is incredible. I had no idea.

Hi.
Thanks to mumsnet HQ for these threads.
I’ve just finished the new Marian Keyes book. I enjoyed it. I do like the “ laugh out loud “ moments.
Think I might start on a Agatha Christie next.

A town like Alice for the umpteenth time. It's an old friend that gives a warm hug!

TheWoollybacksWife · 26/03/2020 14:27

I got a kindle unlimited subscription last year and I'm now too tight to pay for books Blush

My "thing" is Golden Age mysteries. I'd already read everything in the genre that Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L Sayers and Margery Allingham had written. I'd had Carola Dunn recommended on here and I've read all her Daisy Dalrymple books before my subscription started.

Since last year I've read all the Miss Silver books by Patricia Wentworth, all the Violet Carlyle books by Beth Byers and I'm now working my way through the Lady Gold books by Lee Strauss. They aren't literary classics but they are great escapism.

Just re-read the Diary of Anne Frank.
Not sure it was the best choice

JKScot4 · 26/03/2020 17:00

Ive just read Carol Wyer books about a female detective, good page turners.
Also recently read;
The Secret Life of Bees - Sue Monk Kidd
All the light we cannot see - Anthony Doerr
The Book pf Negroes - Lawrence Hill

rosegoldwatcher · 26/03/2020 17:11

I am part way through Adele Parks - Lies, Lies, Lies.
It's an easy read and a page turner. But it is quite dark. Will definitely need to follow it up with something more fun - possibly the Marian Keyes one.

mumwon · 26/03/2020 17:17

I am reading Sharpe's Waterloo by Bernard Cornwell - its extremely bloodthirsty but definitely escapist -its the first time I have read this series of course I have watched the tv program (& lusted after Sean Bean Grin)

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 26/03/2020 19:29

I am trawling through my Kindle, I'm terrible for downloading loads of books and forgetting about them so I'm going back through them all.

Just finished Coptown by Karin Slaughter which is about female police officers in Atlanta in the 70s, a brilliant read, very gritty and the characters are really interesting.

Now I'm reading The Wildflowers by Harriet Evans which has started off like one of those lovely holiday reads but is becoming darker and more complex, a really good page turner.

I brought the new Marian Keyes book for my mum for mothers day so I can read it after! I love Marian Keyes, she creates wonderful characters.

mumwon, have you read The Gallows Thief by Bernard Cornwell, that a great romp of a book Grin

ShinyRuby · 26/03/2020 19:47

I've just finished The Burning Sky by Erin Kelly. Really good, great characters & a good few twists.

ShinyRuby · 26/03/2020 20:28

Whoops, it's The Burning Air!

Wolfiefan · 26/03/2020 20:32

Sirzy and rosegold I have those in my to read pile.
I’m reading some Patricia Cornwell.

Binglebong · 27/03/2020 00:03

Have you tried Josephine Tey Wooley? Not quite convinced by her belief in phrenology but we'll brush that aside.

vampirethriller · 27/03/2020 06:02

The Night Watch by Sarah Waters. I've read it a few times. Before that I tried Pillars of the Earth but couldn't get into it.

CaptainCallisto · 27/03/2020 08:48

I've just finished High Stakes by Dick Francis, and am now at a bit of a loss!

I've recently re-read all the Last Kingdom books by Bernard Cornwell, and Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth/Kingsbridge series and I feel like something new.

DH is suggesting the Honor Harrington series by David Weber (which he says is basically the Napoleonic wars in space) so I shall give that a go. If I don't get on with those I'll probably do Wilbur Smith's Taita books again

AutumnRose1 · 27/03/2020 09:09

I love Sarah Waters but couldn’t get on with The Night Watch.

Just starting Salley Vickers “The Librarian”. Love her short stories but not read a novel of hers before.

This is where we all get through our tsundoku!

TheWoollybacksWife · 27/03/2020 09:16

Binglebong yes I've read Josephine Tey and the Georgette Heyer crime novels too. I'm also downloading any of the British Library Crime Classics that come up on kindle unlimited.

Thelnebriati · 27/03/2020 14:40

My Family and Other Animals.

NotSorry · 27/03/2020 19:31

Just read and really enjoyed the first two books by Helen Durrant - Detective Rachel King - I'm so tight that I'll wait for 1st April as I can then borrow the 3rd one from the lending library for free

Also going to do what a PP said and go through the books I've downloaded - many of them were free with Kindle First Reads

Raera · 29/03/2020 17:06

I've just read "Wonder" by RJ Palacio.
It's book for tweens really but very good for grown ups too.

drspouse · 29/03/2020 17:25

I'm reading "The Body on the Train", a tale of dastardly deeds in the Rhubarb Triangle.

NotSorry · 29/03/2020 18:20

Have now started Lethal White by Robert Galbraith - I love Cormoran Strike

Raera · 29/03/2020 18:23

@NotSorry
I'm quite envious because I've read them all now and wish I could enjoy them for the first time!

NotSorry · 29/03/2020 18:54

@Raera - there is a new one out in September
