Small play equipment for 5yo and 8yo

We only have a small yard - it's paved - we have nothing out there for the DCs except a couple of balls. I do try to grow some things in pots too!

I am thinking of getting them a wobl board but DS has ADHD and needs to be moving a lot, there isn't room for them to ride their bikes, and I'm not sure we could attach anything to the walls.
Can they use a wobl board outside?

We definitely don't have room for a trampoline. I don't think they'd find the kind of trampoline that has a bar (a trampette?) that engaging for very long and it would take the whole space, I imagine, so unless it can be folded away it would get in the way of putting the bins out etc.

Swing ball

drspouse · 25/03/2020 10:50

They are both rubbish at it! And both DCs are left handed and DH and I are right handed making it really complicated to play with them.

I don't think we could anchor it either? As the yard is paved?

would a swing like this fit, when it wasn't being used you could push it into a corner to create more space. you could also paint a 'goal' onto one of the fences/walls of your yard, and then the dc could play football? or perhaps this might be better, it could be put into the middle of the yard then pushed to the back out of the way when not in use

I don't think it would fit, and there's nowhere really to put it out of the way. The walls are all in use really. Does a folding swing exist?

For an idea, it's really messy but you can see the space is very limited.

That spin thing looks good but it wouldn't go all the way round I don't think!

The one we have you put water or sand or soil in the base. It is also a junior version, so just goes round and round not without getting stuck at the top. My DS is pretty uncoordinated, and yet it has been a bit of a distraction at least.

Seed planting has also gone well so far, and chalking things on the ground

HildaSnibbs · 25/03/2020 11:04

Mine are same ages - they're chalking and playing with water in washing up bowls with figures in the water, I've also ordered a child size netball post from amazon - no idea if they'll be able to play ! Also hula hoops are good either for hooping or for playing throwing games. Skipping rope for older one?

drspouse · 25/03/2020 11:14

Older one is even more uncoordinated (0.5th centile for motor skills) and has not to my knowledge ever tried skipping - I fear it will fall into the "I can't do it so I'm not going to try" category which so far YouTube dance classes and Joe Wicks PE have been placed in!

I think they might like a junior netball/basketball post. The older one fancies himself as a basketball star. I think that would go down better than swingball.
And hula hoops is a good idea, as they are not too hard when they hit the other child, too!

Water play will be good later in the year (though it deteriorates into chaos and screaming from the 5yo) but it's a bit chilly still.

could you measure how long a space you have along the middle section of your garden? would a seesaw like this fit? (although i dont think it would be able to be moved so you could see if it fits up the sideways path in your second photo?

iamabox · 25/03/2020 11:34

I've just ordered a large Connect 4 game for out back yard.

drspouse · 25/03/2020 11:35

It would fit up the rebate lengthwise but not in a circle. The rebate is a bit dark so not used for growing as much but I'm not sure how excited they'd be about going up and down and then up and down again!

If only our house/the garden wall were a bit more sturdy and not mainly composed of crumbling mortar...

Connect 4! Yes. Even if no actual playing goes on, they both like making patterns.

I am thinking about Kubb too, I just remembered we played it at my aunt's.

What about some of these? Our two have the pogo balls and get some fun out of those. You’d have to judge whether they’d have the coordination of course but worth a look.

Take a look at Argos outdoor toys/lawn games for ideas.

drspouse · 25/03/2020 11:57

That pogo ball looks either a) fatal or b) fun!

Ok we're starting with giant Connect 4 (and giant Jenga as a package) and an adjustable basketball hoop.

Will add some more things in assuming everything is still shipping...
