When will we hear more on school closures

I know right now there's no way bojo can tell us dates etc. But when will he likely tell parents more about school closures and what he's sort of expecting?

When will he review school closures and let us know how it's looking?

When will he respond to the speculation of it being September? Surely if he is expecting that, he can say that?

Is he hopeful the schools can return for the last term? Or before?

He's a clever man but theres so many questions. I'm sure other parents are worried too.

The knock on effects on children being unable to return to the same class/year/friends.

How far behind all children will be.

How children would have lost their way abit after 5 months at home.

How is he going to protect children home in poorer households?

What about the children in neglectful households?

All the lost exams?

Prepping years 6s for secondary?

Prepping nursery children for school?

Prepping EYFS to leave play based learning and to move into a bigger learning environment?

Are parents really going to be able to work from home for 5 months with children?

When will teachers get time off?

When will the new school year start? Because if they cant go back for a few weeks in summer how can they go back on September 5th?

Please don't tell me that none of this is important in these difficult times. I'm aware we need to do this. I'm aware we are lucky to be able to protect ourselves.

It's just making me feel so anxious. I'm fed up of reading people on Mumsnet saying it's not going to be this year like they know before Boris. I just hope he updates us asap. Even if he says he will review the situation in a month-2 months time.

I think we need to act on the assumption it won't be earlier than after summer

Sirzy · 24/03/2020 18:55

He can’t say anything yet because he doesn’t know.

There will be work being done by the DFE in the background to sort things, particularly and the main aim for now being those in exam years.

There is no point him saying “schools are off until September” but then things calming meaning they can open before. Likewise saying “we expect them to open in May” but then having to postpone it doesn’t help anyone.

As soon as they can safely open them they will. For now it’s a case of keep our children home and safe, do what you can at home and remember all children are in the same position so there is no disadvantage amongst peers in terms of missed lessons

We are all reacting to a situation which is evolving by the hour. So the answer to ALL those questions in the OP is we don't know, it is pointless making predictions, and that even the best informed experts do not have the power to look into the future.

Well, in NI we pretty much already know it’s going to be September I think.

JellyXwellies · 24/03/2020 19:03

Yeah I understand it's impossible for him to say. I just hope he reviews it every so many weeks and keeps us informed. He sounded like he didn't think kids would help the spread as much as other areas such as social distances etc. I think he said it will only push the curve a tiny bit. So I wonder if it could be before September in some ways. I hope it is in many ways as it would help all teachers, children and parents adjust. But if it's not going to happen hopefully we find out soonish. Then we can prepare our kids better. Mines very much missing school already. She has alot of questions.

You’ve answered most of those yourself with that statement.

We don’t know. He doesn't know. He can’t tell us when he’ll know, because nobody knows when that’ll be. When he does know, he’ll tell us.

Lots of the things you’ve mentioned-transition, acclimatising to new year groups etc may well never happen. They are ideal but not essential. This whole thing will have a huge lasting impact on all of us, children included. It’s naive to think it won’t.

Even if he says he will review the situation in a month-2 months time

Would that really reassure you, even if he says-we don't know and we’ll tell you when we know? We’ll find out when we find out.

I think you need to accept it’s going to be a while yet-probably best to prepare yourself for it to be September.

HarrySnotter · 24/03/2020 19:09

I think it may well be September but who knows.

He sounded like he didn't think kids would help the spread as much as other areas such as social distances etc.

I don't agree that he sounded like this at all. Children can easily be superspreaders or they may not spread this virus at all (doubtful). It's a new virus so I don't believe he would say that he didn't think children would spread it as much as other areas, unless of course I missed that. (I would be interested in your source) as he doesn't know. None of us do.

I’m a college tutor and have been told I probably won’t return before my mat leave kicks in (early July) so I’m guessing schools won’t return until September. I know my DC’s school celebrated with the Y6 pupils on Friday so I don’t think they’re expecting them back either.

maddy68 · 24/03/2020 19:10

We have been led to believe in my school that it will be September

SamsMumsCateracts · 24/03/2020 19:13

Our school (primary) is talking about keeping the children with the same teachers next year, since they've only had a term and a half with them. The thing is, all the children are in the same boat with regards to being behind and losing their way a bit, granted done more than others. I'm sure there will be adjustments made and children are remarkably adaptable, they'll probably cope far better that we think they will.

ArnoldBee · 24/03/2020 19:18

BoJo is reviewing the lockdown measures over the next 3 weeks.

Of course hes reviewing these things daily as he knows he will need to get the country back to normal as safely as possible.

I'm not bothered about teaching my 7 year old at the moment as the key thing is keeping him alive - all the other stuff can be sorted later.
