WTF is this nonsense- teacher setting tasks like 'Make a meal' or 'Explore your garden with your five senses'

A) No, they are not 'making a meal' as we are in a take it or leave it situation due to not being able to leave the house

B) WTF?

Is it considered unacceptable to ask for some actual academic stuff that they can do silently?!

^*
The unions were complaining that 1 in 5 teachers were self-isolating a week ago.*^

And 4 out of 5 were in school working extremely hard.

And many of those 1 in 5 were still working, just not in the classroom.

I was one of the 1 in 5 teaching staff as my dd had a cough and cold symptoms. So I have now done a week and half at home / but I am still working. infact I'm working all day every day, way outside my prescribed hours. I'm setting hone learning for other staff. I'm fielding the apparent communication via our hastily assembled new learning platform and new email addresses. I'm responding to pupil work as it comes in, where possible or as soon after as it reasonable - which comes in anytime from around 6am and the latest so far has been 11:30pm last night. And I'm doing everything I can to support the staff who are in class too.

People can complain all they like but the reality is I was at home to help save lives. And I will be at home for the foreseeable to help save my own life, as I am also in an at risk group.

But just because I'm not at school in the building doesn't mean I'm not working hard.

Yes @ChloeDecker that’s true ( I work in a school by the way , I am in today making sure all the teachers get paid, stop bashing me !) but there are also a lot of parents telling the OP to stop whingeing , it’s easy to make a meal with them , here’s all the activities I’ve done etc etc, none of which is helpful to someone who sounds at the end of her tether and probably just needs a hug after 10 days in isolation with her children

HalfTermHalfTerm · 25/03/2020 09:41

But of course we pay school fees and the teachers are paid throughout the school holidays.

All teachers are paid a yearly salary and they will all do some work (lesson planning, etc) during the holidays. I don’t understand your point?

Teachers are NOT payed through the holidays. We are paid for term time only, and this amount is divided into 12 monthly payments.

It would help if the DfE would provide info about what assistance should be given by schools to those kids being kept at home.

This would make it easier for those teachers who are working from home and not involved in providing the keyworker cover. It would also be a lifeline for parents who are trying to work from home and look after their kids (but don’t know their Twinkl from their elbow).

At the moment it seems that some schools and teachers are going above and beyond but other schools have provided nothing more than a sheet of website addresses and no guidance. That is why some parents are floundering in what is already a stressful time.

ChloeDecker · 25/03/2020 10:58

Fair point PeaseBlossom22 - I took your post at face value. Sorry for my sarky response.

Peaseblossom22 · 25/03/2020 11:02

Apology accepted Chloe ..., what a mess this all is . I just want my old life back Sad

ChloeDecker · 25/03/2020 11:08

Me too. I long for when we are back in the classroom properly teaching. Currently marking the Year 13 coursework that I have, in case, but the connection is making everything slow and taking longer than it should. Ho him!
All the best PeaseBlossom22

yr1 and yr 3 ye exploring a garden with their senses. Is beyond her. But apparently it,s fine to do sums.???

Sums require no extra clothing, and given their ages will be fairly straight forward. Also fairly distraction free.
Going into the garden, discussing what all the senses are, helping them find something that tastes good etc, potentially then wanting to bring them back or taking photos, distracting them from distractions, uploading all the work

Yeah one clearly takes more than the other

Kids, sit here and do sums. If he t stuck,

MashedPotatoBrainz · 25/03/2020 12:20

I wish mine had been set a garden task. We're fortunate enough to have a big garden. Instead he had to read about a local/national symbol and make a 'presentation' of 5 interesting facts.

He spent most of this morning rolling around on the floor complaining he was hungry (he'd just had a good breakfast) and threatening to report me to his teacher for starving him.

anothernotherone · 25/03/2020 12:20

Obviously thete ate actually at least 7 senses - although maybe they only learn about that in year 4 [ducks]

anothernotherone · 25/03/2020 12:21

There are not thete ate!

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 25/03/2020 12:28

So they set nice ideas of things to do, and all you can do is bitch and moan?
YABU.
Just don't do them then and set them some work yourself that you feel more "suitable."

TheGreatWave · 25/03/2020 13:07

Firstly teachers can't win, whatever they set will not work in every house, or be to people's liking. Just do the bits you can

Secondly ignore the FB posts, they are tiresome at the best of times.

Lastly I was going to suggest what a pp had, with regards to a shop. There are lots of things that you can do for both DC, price lists, adding money, counting DD (also yr 3) has made a library today.

Twinkl does split into key stages, but I have been thinking of an idea (shops) and then searching around that.

Rosebel · 25/03/2020 13:34

Just be glad the teachers are setting work. I was complaining earlier that my children had no homework but the school have now, emailed and will be sending lessons from Monday.
I'm pleased as I'm worried about their education but mine are older (in secondary) so it's a bit different.
