Nappies - how many?!

Hi all

First baby due any day.
As a rational human I was planning on buying nappies as required and so only bought a couple of packs of size 0 and a couple of packs of size 1 with the idea that we could pop out for more in the better size when we knew what worked best for our baby.

Sadly amongst the CV panic buying we now realise we were idiots and people are selling them online for £60-70 per pack 🤦‍♀️

My question is - how many nappies did your LO get through typically at first? Daily basis! And how quickly do they go up in sizes (ie should I pick up a pack of size 2 next time I’m out or am I now joining the hoardes of the ridiculous?!)

Hoping the new measures will make life easier and somehow stop panic buying!

About 6 to 10 in a 24h period. You wouldn't be likely to need size two for a good few weeks to months

Alarae · 23/03/2020 23:41

We go through up to 10 nappies a day. I've recently bought size 2 nappies for my three week old, just a couple of days after buying a few more packs of size 1!

Admittedly I'm not worried about stocking up as I use the Aldi nappies and they have more than enough on the shelves in the morning if I need to grab some.

The only tip I can give you is not to be fussy about brands - the majority of supermarket brands are fine - and use smaller shops if desperate.

Thanks both and good to know about getting to a supermarket at a reasonable time!

Mine DS used about 90 nappies in the first week. Newborns are a constant poo and wee factory.

SpillTheTeaa · 23/03/2020 23:57

Depends what brand you use!
I always found pampers to be more generous in their sizes.
I didn't count how many nappies in all honesty as it can vary so much. I also have a DS so he would love to pee all over a fresh nappy placed under his bum Grin.
I've tried all the nappies and my favourite is pampers then Aldi.
In all honesty I'd get the 4 packers you're entitled too in most shops just so you don't have to go out if you don't need to especially with a new baby

Nappies are good for a couple of wees. I changed them every feed in the begining. But as we settled a bit I didn't change them every night fed unless they pooed. Just to maximize sleep

Might be an idea to see if you can get free or very cheap reusable nappies and/or nappy wraps, eg from Facebook or local selling groups. Even if you only keep them as a backup, it would remove the stress of shopping.

SometimesSquircles · 24/03/2020 01:10

We used 14 a day for the first 3 months as he didn't like to be wet. We've got a very big lad and size one were ok for at least the first month. Good luck and enjoy your lovely new baby.

Buy cloth ones online! Have a look at the nappy lady or Babipur.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 09:41

If you run out you can use folded muslins too

ComeOnEileen11 · 24/03/2020 09:43

Definitely reusables. You can get some great value ones online - littles and blooms, Alva's, great for the constant stream of nappies that newborns get through.

severalboxes · 24/03/2020 09:47

At a push you can use muslins and a wrap. Google the folding technique for muslins. Muslins are your friend!

With disposables, ignore the blue lines, you don't need to change with every wee (although some kids complain as soon as they wet).

I doubt the smaller sizes will sell out (or stay sold out), as they're not used for long, babies are in 2/3/4 most of the time.

Thank you all so much!
