Hello everyone,
I 've got a quick query. I have been invited for an interview for CSW position, the job description clearly says needs to be physically fit. As I got back problem which flares up from time to time. Can they turn me down for my back problem? Is it wise to be honest by mentioning my problem or not. As this is bank position, I might just pick up a shift when my back is alright if I am successful so I am not sure if I need to mention, please advise me.
Regards

They need to ensure your safety at work. A carer role is generally quite physical, moving and rolling people, pushing beds and wheelchairs, carrying trays of food etc and on your feet most of the day.

If you know you are not physically fit enough to do that then you may need to consider alternative roles

And yes you must be honest on your application or occupational health assessment. If you know you have a back problem you must say so, in order to avoid worsening it

You'll need an occupational health assessment regardless. You may be able to work within the limits of your back problem but it may not be the right job for you to consider - you run the risk of making your back problem a lot worse.

Thank you so much for your instant response. The reason I applied for this role is to build a platform and to familiarize myself with the hospital setting as I have been trying to obtain a RN pin as I am a foreign nurse and which is not possible without a practical test (OSCE), for this I need to practice in a Hospital I guess, once I get RN pin, I can get to choose where to work as a nurse, probably in nursing home which can be lighter hopefully as I have seen qs I have been working in a care home as a carer for nearly 6 years. This job will be for a temporary period I hope, so shall I still go for it?
Your advice would be highly appreciated.
Thanks

NH patients are less clinically unstable, but generally less mobile than your average acute ward patients. They need regular assistance to change position, fall over, and even though we use hoists and manual handling equipment it is still a physical job.
You are on your feet a lot

WarIsPeace · 23/03/2020 15:59

But if you are currently working as a carer in a NH you know whether or not you are fit enough for the role, surely?

Raju06 · 23/03/2020 17:28

Yes, I am currently working as a care assistant in a nursing home not for NHS where my back problem originated, anyway my question was; can I be turned down after health check up on this ground? Thanks

Yes, you could have the job offer withdrawn if Occupational Health felt your back problem would prevent you from fulfilling your role.
