If we really value our NHS staff....

Why can't their hospital canteens be turned into temporary shops for them to buy their groceries after shifts? Canteen staff could man them, supermarkets who "say" they value these people could put their money where their mouth is and deliver. Not like they would lose out as they would still be selling the stuff.

Would just need swipe card entry to keep the greedy masses out.

Let's be honest, If our NHS workers fall by the wayside, we're all stuffed.

In theory great idea.

However needs loads of organisation to out into practice and who is going to do that?

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 23/03/2020 13:27

It would make more sense for chain supermarkets with branches near hospitals to devote a branch to nhs staff only.

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 23/03/2020 13:27

(I get that would only work in bigger towns and cities with multiple branches of any given supermarket)

browzingss · 23/03/2020 13:33

@CarolHasAnotherUTI there would be people calling the company “disgusting” as elderly/vulnerable/disabled people aren’t included in that, or complaints because it’s nearby residents local store and now they have to undertake non essential travel elsewhere. Also you’d probably get people trying to get in anyway by saying their shopping on behalf of a NHS loved one

LucyFox · 23/03/2020 18:08

but it’s not just NHS staff who are key workers & needing support with this ... lots of non-NHS staff are working long hours directly supporting the national effort & are struggling to shop (sewage workers struggling with the random “stuff” people have started throwing down the toilet, care workers visiting the vulnerable, pharmacists, posties, farmers trying to get food from fields to supermarkets & so many more)

DaveMinion · 23/03/2020 20:22

My hospital canteen is staff only now and they’ve started selling bread and eggs etc. There is also a truck that’s coming once a day for staff to do shopping.

They’ve even stopped parking charges from the 1st April. Love my trust.

CaffeineInfusion · 23/03/2020 20:53

That's exactly the sort of thing I imagined.

Yes I get there are workers in many sectors who are vital to maintain our standard of living. But not all have the emotional aspect.

My local supermarket dedicate the first hour of trading to NHS and the elderly. They have security on the door to keep the hoards out. I am disgusted by what I see.

What about nhs staff who don't work in hospitals?
And the other millions of key workers like teachers who looked after my children today and the man down the who drives HGV for big supermarkets?

Ladyglitterfairydust · 23/03/2020 22:07

I’m a teacher and today we have been told we can order food via our school kitchen and pay for them the same way we would pay for our lunch. It’s more expensive than the supermarkets, but a kind offer.

AppleFruitloaf66 · 24/03/2020 08:56

@DaveMinion which Trust do you work for, if you don’t mind me asking ?

I work for the NHS also and will query to see if ours will do the same.
