TV adverts for things you're currently unable to buy

I know that they're probably booked weeks if not months in advance, but am I the only one who's bemused and shouting at the telly even more than normally by the sheer number of adverts urging me to buy things that you currently simply cannot buy - or which you could but absolutely nobody is going to do so right now with all of the indefinite uncertainty (and lack of money)?

Just this morning, I've seen ads for McDonalds, Haven holidays and Merlin Annual Pass. Also the 'accident' lawyers. If you've had a recent injury and are now really struggling as a result, then maybe; but I'm guessing that many of their cases will be people wanting a fair resolution for more historic injuries. If you had an accident three years ago, you're not going to choose right now to start instigating proceedings, are you?

I realise that it's hugely tough for so many industries. The holiday companies can't just shut down and, hoping things might be back to normal by then, suddenly get everything in place and start taking bookings come July/August.

On the other hand, every third advert appears to be for that Peloton bike. They're probably doing a hitherto-undreamed-of trade, considering that people are stuck inside, unable to exercise - with time on their hands - gyms are closed; but you can order the bikes online and get them delivered to your door.

Pretty sure adverts are scheduled and paid for a certain amount of time in advance. They should tail off soon.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/03/2020 10:50

They will want to keep up their brand profile ready for custom when the time comes. It does feel a bit anachronistic thouģh!

That's a very good point, actually - I hadn't thought of it that way. They might also be playing the long game Smile

I keep seeing lots of cruises advertised in newspapers and magazines, bet they're kicking themselves for booking the slots so far ahead.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 23/03/2020 11:25

I was assuming they'd been pre-booked & paid for. I wonder what will appear when the pre-booked ones end?

TipseyTorvey · 23/03/2020 11:27

I was just laughing at this (instead of crying) as it goes from "800 dead in Italy" to "amazing mascara that doesn't clump, get the London look". I can't get my head round it. What will they do when the pre booked ads run out I wonder? Retailers won't be spending their ad budgets now.

TipseyTorvey · 23/03/2020 11:28

Ifiwerenotanandroid snap!

I wonder what we'll get instead? Basically can't advertise anything right now we need to stop consuming and start conserving. I don't know what kind of adverts there are for being sensible and resourceful? Maybe we will stop having adverts altogether and have health broadcasts or something instead?

Standrewsschool · 23/03/2020 11:51

Haven’t seen any toilet roll adverts on tv recently!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/03/2020 16:06

In amidst all of the neighbouring empty shelves at Asda the other day, there was a completely full section of Ye Old Oak hotdog sausage tins and jars. Maybe they'll advertise things like those.

I think, as a manufacturer, I'd be dreadfully insulted if people left my company's products firmly on the shelves, even when everything else had already been panic-bought! It's one thing to not be people's absolute favourite, but to still be rejected when none of the other alternatives are actually available!

Are there any other Still Game fans who remember the pineappleade in Navid's shop? Grin

Ye Olde* Oak, that was meant to be.

I sort of made a reverse typo in spelling it correctly when the company themselves do not Grin

They will have paid high prices for advertising space and will expect the advert to go ahead.
I know what you mean though.

I keep seeing adverts for holidays in Turkey.
And they were still showing that vile 'what the cluck' KFC ad last night as well. Sooner that's gone the better.

I have now seen adverts for toilet roll and pasta!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/03/2020 18:59

I have now seen adverts for toilet roll and pasta!

Are they from manufacturers or large retailers - or is it individual householders who panic-bought and now urgently need their sheds back for somebody to self-isolate? Grin

I can't watch the TV for this very reason!

Buffet..if you have had a personal injury..you time out after three years

So it is something that’s worth starting now
I’m sure you haven’t
But there may be someone else who didn’t know

JasperRising · 23/03/2020 21:38

Not a TV advert but got English Heritage what's on booklet for March and Easter. That seemed a bit overtaken by events...

Thanks, Dowser. I knew there was some limit and I can see why people would want to pursue it. I suppose, it this went on for a month, it would probably be worth sitting it out before starting the case; but if it is going to be 18 months, as some are saying, there's probably no sense in waiting, then.
