Don't know what to do about my job

I started a new job last month in a public facing role. As of last week we were advised that for at least 3 months all customer appointments have been cancelled. Apart from being gutted that my job that I worked hard to get now doesn't exist for an unknown period, they still want us to go in. We are unable to WFH due to the role being public facing. We have been advised there will be work for us to do but haven't specified what.

I am concerned that they will have to train us in universal credit (I work for DWP) and we will have to deal with claims - which means dealing with the not vulnerable, homeless people etc who do not have a phone or internet to keep in touch regarding their claims. This type of role is a grade above mine and I don't see them increasing our pay for this, even temporarily.

I don't want to work face to face with the most vulnerable at the moment.

My DP says do not go back but I worked hard to get this job and want to do all I can to keep it.

I'm considering asking to stay at home and return in 3 months to my role if it is there by then. I don't mind about not being paid as I have some freelance work I can do.

Does anyone think they will accept this? I'm so confused.

Dealing with the *most vulnerable

Sorry for typos.

Honestly, no I don't think they will accept that, especially in the Civil Service which really needs to use every resource available to keep people going right now. I've got family who are in a similar situation being redeployed where there is need and they have very little choice unless you're vulnerable or live with someone who is.

I would imagine if you do get redeployed into something that requires a higher level of training, you may be asked to support in more of a back office function - so maybe you could be doing more admin stuff to free up time for those more trained to do the public facing interactions? Or maybe could you speak to your boss and explain that you are concerned about limiting your contact; and offer to do this sort of thing to ease pressure? Then you look like a team player but could maybe avoid the parts you’re concerned about?

Suck it up. At least you have a job. Many have lost theirs. And a lot of people you will be helping are likely to be those people who are losing their jobs right now.

Does anyone know what will happen if we have 'lockdown' what does it even mean? Will people like myself still have to go to work? (Travelling on public transport) Or will it just be 'Essential' workers?

I'm thinking about getting a sick note at least. My mental health has taken a bad turn and I just don't know what to do.

I don’t think they would ever agree to that, what kind of commitment does that show. I’m sorry your MH is suffering but be grateful you have a job, we’ve both lost ours and no idea how we will survive.

You don't even know yet what you might be asked to do, if anything.

Find out, voice your concerns, then make a decision.
