Am I going to accidentally poison us all?

Day six of a fourteen day quarantine which will be followed by indefinite self-isolation due to health issues and when it comes to passing the time, shit is getting desperate in the TimeAintNothing household.

We made a sourdough starter with the DC as a sort of science experiment and now they want to bake bread with it. DH is a bit dubious that it might not be safe to eat bread made from paste that's been fermenting on top of the fridge for the best part of a week and last thing we need is a bout of food poisoning I'm bored enough to think that food poisoning might be a welcome fucking relief

Has anyone made a starter before. Am I going to poison us?

Well that is literally how you make it !

willowpatterns · 22/03/2020 23:04

Have you got enough toilet paper?

redastherose · 23/03/2020 08:24

That is how you start a sour dough so you'd probably be ok provided you've done it as per instructions. The sourdough starter does look fairly odd the first time you make it.

NinetySixer · 23/03/2020 08:43

That is how you make a sourdough starter though.

It will need a while to get more established before you can use it anyway.

If it’s working it should bubble up and out of the jar so keep cutting it back.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/03/2020 08:45

That’s what sourdough is made with though? It’s same if you buy it?

DelurkingAJ · 23/03/2020 09:29

My DM makes the most amazing sourdough bread and her starter looks as if it’s crawled out of some alien spaceship. You’re cooking it right through, which massively diminishes the chances of poisoning!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2020 09:33

But sourdough lasts forever. People keep them for years. Isn't that the whole point.

TimeAintNothing · 23/03/2020 10:26

I think it's because it looks like something that should be binned, makes you wonder if you should be eating it! It's full of bubbles but I'll feed it a few more days before using it.

Have you got enough toilet paper?

We're down to three rolls, things are going to start getting tense.

Ha we’ve started a sourdough starter on purpose. I bake a lot anyway including bread, but it means I don’t have to go out and forage for yeast.
It should smell pleasantly sour, and on day 5/6 you can start baking with it. Loads of info on google and inspiration on instagram.
I’ve called mine Gilbert, and I’m planning on keeping it alive long enough to send my kids to uni with it in future years with off cuts. Aren’t they lucky?! Heirloom sourdough Grin
