Can you freeze bananas and are they like mush on defrosting?

We are over run with bananas! Morrison’s swapped all fruit on our order for bananas and DP accepted them all!

Which should be fine as DD has one a day but we’ve got 16 of the beggars! I’ve given lots away too!
Can you freeze bananas - I’m thinking peeled and chopped into chunks as that’s how DD eats them but wondered what are they like on defrosting?

If they’re mush she’ll not eat them... I need them on the firmer side. Google isn’t helpful!

Thanks oh wise ones!

Best thing to do with them is cut them in chunks, freeze them then blend them with a little chocolate powder or peanut butter. Tastes like ice cream, delicious

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/03/2020 12:13

I know you can freeze them in their skins and they go black on the outside, but the insides slide out easily and are perfect for banana cakes.
I don’t know about for eating in chunks.

I chop them and freeze them then take them out to use in smoothies. I whizz them up frozen like ice cubes. Dollop of yogurt, spoonful of peanut butter, teaspoon of chocolate ovaltine or powdered hot chocolate. Sort of a Nigella Lawson recipe. I sometimes add oats too.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/03/2020 12:14

As before, definitely slice but, if you don’t want to blend them before eating, freeze them between layers of grease proof paper in an airtight tub.

Marieo · 22/03/2020 12:15

As long as you peel them first they will be fine (I learnt the hard way...). Or you could make banana pancakes and freeze or when they're mushy (1 banana, 2 eggs, 3 tbspns of oats); obviously can adjust the ratios.

fellyjish · 22/03/2020 12:15

You could make banana bread and freeze that?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/03/2020 12:15

PS meant to add, they don’t taste/feel exactly the same but perfectly edible.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 22/03/2020 12:16

If you’ve got flour etc you could bake with your dd today and make banana bread then slice it and freeze

Once frozen they will only be any good for baking or blending up with a drop of milk to make a kind of ice cream. You won’t be able to defrost and eat as a banana if you see what I mean

randomsabreuse · 22/03/2020 12:17

They are very much soft but great for egg free baking like banana bread. All recipes egg free banana bread is reliable for me even subbing vegan "butter" for the real thing (stupid allergies)

GulliBelle · 22/03/2020 12:24

Of course you can! Have you never heard of the Bluth family frozen banana stand - there's money the banana stand Wink

woodencoffeetable · 22/03/2020 12:26

only 16...
keep them in the fridge.
the skin will turn brown but they will not go mushy.

if you freeze, cut into chunk to add to cereal or for baking or for smoothies. frozen def gets mushy

BikeRunSki · 22/03/2020 12:31

Yes and yes
But they are great for baking and smoothies.

milveycrohn · 22/03/2020 12:34

I freeze them all the time, but I peel them first.
They are a little squishy, but I use them is a breakfast drink (ie blended), or in cooking.

Whyismycatanasshat · 22/03/2020 12:43

Thank you all!

I have made 4 banana loaves already, and I’m not that big a fan. I think we had 53 bananas delivered... 7 large packs anyways, no apples, pears, satsumas, grapes, strawberries, melon etc!

@woodencoffeetable 16 seems a lot to try and save in the fridge when we eat one a day - well DD does, neither dp or I are that keen!

My DD has been recommended to have a banana a day but will only have it a certain way - she can be a right stubborn tyke given the opportunity so if I can freeze them and not waste them I’ll be delighted!

Dont forget that banana puree is an egg substitute in baking, so they can be quite useful. I mash them and freeze in silicone ice cube trays. 2 or 3 cubes equals an egg

NorthEndGal · 22/03/2020 12:46

Also, fried bananas with brown sugar, cinnamon and butter is divine

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 22/03/2020 13:52

Put some in the fridge. The skins go black but they stay firm. 10 days + so far. You do need to warm them up to eat but other than that, perfect. I store most in there now

Lizziesbusy · 22/03/2020 14:35

Take them out of their skin and freeze in foil.
Perfect.

PotsOfPebbles · 22/03/2020 16:43

Yes you can. We freeze them a lot. Make sure you peel them first.

You can also freeze eggs, we do this a lot too.

Can you freeze bananas and are they like mush on defrosting?
dollybird · 22/03/2020 16:53

You can, but don't let them defrost completely and they're a bit like banana ice cream 😋

hedgehoglurker · 22/03/2020 16:54

My son loves snacking on frozen banana slices.

dementedma · 22/03/2020 16:57

Very mushy on defrosting but fine for banana bread.

megletthesecond · 22/03/2020 16:59

Yes.
Fine for muffins and adding to porridge.
