Positive pregnancy test - what now?

Hi all,

DH and I have been trying for a baby for a while, and had just made the decision to put TTC on hold until the CV situation calms down a bit when BOOM, late period, POAS, pregnant.

It's our first child.

I feel simultaeously terrified and exhilerated. And vaguely amused as it's bloody sod's law. We're such a sensible couple and have been putting off TTC for years, waiting for the right time. Apparently during a global pandemic is our ideal moment!

Any practical advice? Will they still want me to see a doctor/midwife for an initial antenatal appointment? I'm asthmatic (although it's well controlled) so was planning on staying in for the recommended 12 weeks anyway, barring a few face-to-face meetings a week with clients at my house (I'm a self employed tutor, extremely thorough with hygiene/distance rules).

Any advice/sympathy/reassurance welcome! TIA!

Congratulations!
Just self-isolate for the first 12 weeks, take folic acid, stay active (at home) and healthy.
Not much else happens in the 1st trimester.
And take it from there.
Flowers

@bloggersnetwork thank you so much! All really sensible advice; I have plenty of folic acid and am generally fairly active so all that should be fairly straightforward. Thanks so much for the reassurance!

Congratulations! See if you can set up your tutoring/meetings online if you can.

Hi @Takeyoutothehorsedentist, huge congratulations, I hope you can still take some joy from this lovely news :) It is still to be celebrated.

I’m currently in my two week week and due to test at the end of this week. A desperately wanted baby but will probably delay for a few months if I’m not pregnant. What will be will be. We are the same as you and have been delaying TTC for ages as boringly sensible and wanted everything to be in place before we did. You have to laugh I guess.

Remember that all the evidence so far indicates that pregnant women aren’t effected any differently than non-pregnant folk. There is also zero evidence for vertical transmission (and other related virus’ like SARS and MERS do not impact on the foetus either) so try to relax and enjoy these early days. You are almost certainly going to be fine. As will your baby.

Oh and avoid the mumsnet conception threads on this topic as full of people scaremongering.

Carry on with the folic acid and vitamin D is all you can do right now. Take care.

Congratulations! You should be able to self-refer on your local hospital's web page. You'll have a midwife appointment around 10 weeks and your scan between 11-14 weeks. Antenatal appointments are considered essential.

mindutopia · 22/03/2020 12:53

You can get in touch with your midwife team but honestly nothing happens until the 12 week scan. They could feasibly do your booking in by phone if necessary except for bloods, but even the bloods can wait. I’m asthmatic (but not pregnant) and I would still plan to self isolate for 12 weeks because seeing a midwife or even having a scan (in the absence of any obvious complications) will have no impact on the health of your pregnancy. But being infected with CV may so no reason to chance it for routine appointments until things settle down. Congrats on your pregnancy!

Dowser · 22/03/2020 12:53

Congratulations
Your baby is one of the first signe of new growth in this global mess
Do not let what is going on detract you from that joy
This is one very special baby
I believe babies coming to this planet this year and next will be very special and much needed

Ah thank you all for the lovely lovely messages! I'm actually feeling really delighted and in the mood to celebrate.

@HeyJupiter good luck with your two week wait; I hope it has the outcome you're hoping for!

@Chanel05 Thanks; I don't drive so my local hospital is only accessible via public transport. Will ring my GP surgery tomorrow and see what they say.

@mindutopia particular thanks for talking me through the process! I've read about it in the pregnancy book I read but in the fluster of actually being pregnant I've forgotten it all!

@Dowser Thank you so much for your kind words.
