Donating Ocado vouchers for NHS Staff shopping

In the same way that I can donate to a food bank when I do my shop, I wonder if we could do the same for NHS staff.

I would really like to show support and help in a practical way, but without doing anything that would not be helpful like going out.

Maybe there is some way that Ocado or the other big supermarkets could set this up. Perhaps they could create a food parcel of essential items, that staff could collect and we could all pay towards it.

We don't need them. We are not going to loose money. The people who run their own businesses and self employed owned help. Not us

What they need is us to donate our slots so they can get some food! There has to be a way to prioritise them.

What about the police, the fire services, the care workers, the transport workers, the entire infrastructure of the workforce that carry the country forward - the plumbers, electricians, refuse collectors, construction workers, where do you wish the cut off point to be?

HarryDaylight · 21/03/2020 20:16

And let's not forget the supermarket workers, delivery drivers, mail services, samaritan volunteers, military veterans, where is the cut off point?

MoreHairyThanScary · 21/03/2020 20:27

And the care home staff and the cleaners

Toddlerteaplease · 21/03/2020 20:52

Really don't see why we need allocated slots for shopping either. Those of us who work 12 hour shifts get days off. Plenty of time to go shopping.

HarryDaylight · 21/03/2020 22:14

And why would I want to donate money towards food parcels for NHS workers, many of whom earn a very good salary plus pension etc already? And do we include consultants, as well as cleaners for the food parcels?
Frankly, I am not happy that NHS professionals are sharing the allocated shopping times in supermarkets with the elderly and vulverable. The elderly and vulvnerable should be shopping on their own with as little chance of catching Covid-19 as possible. It simply has not been thought out properly.

It’s a very kind thought, but I’d rather you donated to a food bank or someone in need. I’ve got a solid income, I have no worries about being made redundant, and if anything, will be getting paid for plenty of overtime.

Toddlerteaplease come back in a month and tell me how many days off you are getting. Yes, right now I can shop, I have time off, I can sleep. I'm enjoying it whilst I can.

MadameJosephine · 21/03/2020 22:17

Honestly, I appreciate the sentiment and all the public support but I’m just doing my job. Although it’s a bit scary at the moment I consider myself lucky to have work and the certainty of a wage coming at the end of the month.

It's a really lovely thought but the best reward is to use the NHS safely and responsibly, support us in campaigning for better terms and conditions, and safer staffing ratios. That's worth so much more than money, or a box of chocolates.
