What would happen if you left your car unlocked?

Just wondering really...because I discovered my husband hadn't locked our car and it had been in the car park adjacent to our flats unlocked for 3 days and no harm done. Phew. Quite impressive I think bearing in mind we live in relatively central London (zone 2) and on a local authority estate.

Made me wonder...what would happen on your street if you left your car unlocked?

I left mine not just unlocked but with the drivers door wide open one night last year. When I went to get in it early next morning a neighbours cat shot out, presumably it had been asleep on the back seat. I don’t know who was most surprised.
A few years ago we left our front door wide open, we lived on a fairly busy main road, nothing was pinched and even more surprising was that the dog was still inside, she was quite old and probably slept all day as that was what she normally did and didn’t notice the open door.

I've left mine unlocked with keys in the ignition.

My neighbour popped in saying she'd shut my car door and locked my car, and handed me my keys 😁

I hadn't used the car for a few days! I thanked her for noticing.

Thank goodness it hadn't rained.

I live in a sleepy rural village and front doors are not locked here, even when we pop to the village shop.

We had our (locked) car stolen on a quiet cul de sac in relatively naice Cheshire, so... That?! Bastards.

The huge boot lid on my car opens from key fob. I've accidentally opened when keys have been in my pocket and left it open in my work car park for 6 hours, (I work in a very busy DIY store) nothing happened.

Nothing, do it regularly, front door of the house is normally open when I'm out we just lock at night. My sons girlfriend couldn't find her car keys the other day and found them in the ignition where they'd been for three days!

I rarely lock my car. I live in a place with close to zero crime, and my car is not worth stealing!

I live at the end of a quiet cul de sac with no through foot traffic. It's generally very safe in the 16 years I've been here. But day years ago I did accidentally leave my car open. It was just before Christmas and my (ex)DH's presents were in there. Happened to be same night we were targeted around here.

They used emptied my gym back and packed it with the presents, but got disturbed by a neighbor and dumped in the hedge which was found in the early morning and returned to me.

My car wasn't damaged to gain entry, others were...

Nothing, we've accidentally left the car open and gone out and left our house unlocked and come back to find it all as we left it.

Once I came home before DS and he'd left the house unlocked. I took his xbox and put it in the boot of my car and then parked round the back and sat in the dining room. He was mortified when he came in and phoned his mate to say he'd been burgled and left the house open and Mum was going to go ape Grin

My locked car was stolen before xmas, my new car would be gone in no time if it was unlocked.

Trumpton · 23/03/2020 08:42

Here someone would put their shopping in it !
Funny but only because she got it back !

What would happen if you left your car unlocked?
SpillTheTeaa · 23/03/2020 08:42

Don't even sit with it unlocked. I was once told this story of how a man got into the back seat of a woman's car when at a petrol station and the petrol station worker informed her what had happened and urged her to stay in the petrol station shop and they think he was linked to gang rapes. Not sure how accurate or true it is but it scared me enough not to have the doors unlocked Sad.

Also drive with the doors locked because for a while there were people trying car doors when people were sat in traffic.

goldpartyhat · 23/03/2020 08:46

Most likely nothing around here, although someone in a nearby village had their house 'broken into' as it was unlocked, and burgled. Posted on village fb Page was a couple of men trying car handles so it's pretty common in certain areas.

If your items or car is stolen, the insurance may not pay out (or pay in full) as you are expected to secure your vehicle. It's in the contract.

I left mine unlocked with my phone and purse inside overnight once. Luckily both were still there in the morning when I realised.

CatFaceCats · 23/03/2020 10:53

Nothing! I’ve left front keys in the door too. First time, postie locked it and kept an eye for me coming back from the school run. Second time, a neighbour noticed and texted me.
I live in a pretty safe area though and everyone knows each other.

DH left his car parked outside our old house in Rotherham on a main bus route, so not a quiet cul-de-sac, with his keys hanging out of the drivers door lock. The car and keys were still there 12 hours later and we only discovered them when he needed to go to work and couldnt find them. They also had the front door keys on, so very lucky no one noticed.
