Anyone else’s private nursery staying open?

Gulpingcoffee · 20/03/2020 22:47

The nursery my children attend is staying open, apparently it’s the owner/managers right as it’s privately owned. Obv the children of keyworkers will be going there but also the children who normally attend can also go if the manager finds he has space. They’re going to be v on top of hygiene etc, they say. Anyone else come across this?

Yes. My nursery will be staying open, expecting approx 30 children rather than the 100 we normally have. We have also had parents of children at other (closed) nurseries asking if we can take them.

Looneytune253 · 20/03/2020 22:52

Absolutely not allowed. Only key worker / vulnerable children should be attending

BurnIt · 20/03/2020 22:53

Yes ours is but consolidating si 2 or 3 in one place.

That’s what I thought looneytune but it seems it’s up to the owner. Keyworker children will take priority of course and then if there is some space the regular children. Kind of strange!

Yes for key children. I shall be working normal hours next wk then it will be reviewed.

BackyardChickens · 20/03/2020 22:59

I think it’s disgraceful that private nurseries are staying open. They should be closing and only opening to vulnerable children. Hopefully they will be forced shut soon.

My DD works in a private nursery which is taking in key worker children from monday

Tiredmum21 · 20/03/2020 23:03

I don't understand - my dd is in a private nursery but they have been told by the council they need to close for everyone expect children of key workers. How can this not apply for other private nurseries?

GoldenPoppy · 20/03/2020 23:09

I work in a private nursery, Im terrified. I have asthma but cant afford to live off of sick pay, management have also said that anyone taking tome off without symptoms are letting the team down.
Nothing has changed, people are still walking into classrooms to collect children iften bringing other children with them.
Management are actively looking for more children to make up numbers.
We are to administer calpol, tixylix for temps/coughs if parents request and not send children home as its not policy.

Rhodes2015again · 20/03/2020 23:13

DDs nursery is open to key workers only.
I unexpectedly fall into this category but loosely had things covered so didn’t ask the nursery if DD could have a place as felt quite cheeky.
However nursery contacted me and presumably every other parent this morning, confirmed that I was eligible to bring DD in next week so I am. They seemed very eager for me to still take her. Have told them if there is staffing issue then to ring me first and I will take dd to allow nhs parents children to continue to go.

God knows. It’s appalling. I suppose as they are a private business they can do as they please

MushroomTree · 20/03/2020 23:15

Yes for key workers/vulnerable children only. As they have so few at my daughter's setting they're moving them all to one of their other settings, which is going to mean a two hour round trip twice a day to get her there and back.

I'm dreading the increase in fuel costs.

There's not much else I can do though. I need to work and I recognise I'm lucky to still have the childcare to be able to do so.

Gulpingcoffee · 20/03/2020 23:20

My understanding from ours is keyworker children take priority. If there are any spaces left over regular attendees may be able to go. So they wouldn’t be taking keyworker children’s spaces. As we live in a big city there are lots of nurseries staying open.

Yes but just for key workers children...next week will be interesting...

UhKevin · 21/03/2020 08:05

Regular children shouldn’t be invited to go if they’ve got spaces left after keyworker and vulnerable (it would be nice if people stopped forgetting about vulnerable) children. They should be managing staff ratios as appropriate to only take those groups.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 21/03/2020 08:12

My son's old nursery are staying open but I'm not sure if it's for everyone or just key workers children.

MeanwhileAtNumber98 · 21/03/2020 08:24

@june2007 that's exactly the situation at the nursery I work in. Don't work together do we 🤔?!

BurpingFrog · 21/03/2020 13:20

It's such a confusing situation. A couple of days ago my child's nursery said that, if allowed and if numbers made it viable, they would stay open (not just for key workers' children).

Today, though, they have confirmed closure stating they are only allowed to take key workers' children and there aren't enough in that category to make staying open viable.

I was confused after the first email and looked into it at length. Private nurseries were initially "asked" to close, but not forced (so rather like the previous restaurants and pubs situation prior to their enforced closure yesterday).

However, emergency legislation is being put through parliament to allow enforced closure, or enforced remaining open (for keyworkers) of nursery settings, including private settings (any Ofsted registered setting).

Presumably my nursery is closing now due to this and I can only imagine all others will now/soon not be able to offer places to non-keyworker families either.

Gulpingcoffee · 21/03/2020 14:15

Thanks for the explanation Burping. I know in our nursery they would certainly keep the ratios correct and safe. We’ll see what happens.

PACEY and Ofsred have said all childminders to close now, open to key worker children only.
