Contact when food shopping

I realise we have to all cut down our contact with others and obviously going to the pubs and cafes is not advised but how is an hour in the pub so different to an hour in asda? I don't want to go to the pub..... I'm just wondering. Our local supermarkets are busy (although Booths was much more civilised....).

I would guess it's because pubs have fewer things that a greater number of people will touch multiple times: door handles, tables, beer pumps, multi person tills, reused glasses/cutlery/crockery, etc

As well as what kellyhall said, If it was a choice between an hour in the supermarket and an hour in the pub then yes, the risk would be similar. But one is essential and the other is not - you remove half the risk by not doing the non essential thing

Also a trip to the supermarket is necessary, a trip to the pub isn't. Its about reducing the risk of contact and spread, it cant be eliminated entirely. If everyone has X amount of fewer contacts each day there will be X amount less spread of illness.

Surely a pub has more of those things?

I think because in a pub you are sitting in close proximity with people in a social setting for a period of time whereas in a supermarket you can keep your distance (if not very busy) and just get in and our plus food shopping is more of a necessity than sitting in the pub

DH only goes out to get a small amount of food shopping. He puts on gloves, walks to shop with credit card and shopping bags.
comes back, puts bags down inside the door, removes gloves, goes to wash hands.
I put my kitchen gloves on, unpack items, wipe packaged goods/tins with my washing up liquid, water and bleach solution, dry and put away.
Clean gloves.
Wash fruit and veg under running water.
Clean bags and door handles.
We have to eat, I am at risk.
I clean everything we touch a couple of times a day, phones, remote controls, light switches, handles etc.
I think that is the best we can do for now.
If either of us get ill, DH won't go out at all.

Pubs are completely optional.*

Grocery shopping is not.

Spend your risks on essential tasks.
