What work is your secondary school setting?

Just wondering really. My son has to log on every morning and at the beginning of each lesson online to ‘present’ himself. Work is being set and also homework. Another boy I know who goes to a really good school has literally been given a maths text book and told to ‘work through it’ for the rest of the year. I’ve seen people on social media asking for advice on what to teach their children - does that mean some schools are barely setting work?

Give the schools a minute to get sorted.

The schools are only officially “closed” from later today. We had no idea whose children would be allowed to be there on Monday until the middle of the night. It’s been incredibly stressful all week and we’re likely being exposed to the virus by the children we’re teaching.

I’m setting weekly work and homework via Microsoft teams which will be a mixture of videos, uploaded sheets and notes, and online questions. Our department is signed up to a couple of brilliant online resources so I can see exactly what they’ve done and how long they’ve spent doing it!

But I do agree with the previous posters - we are all learning day by day and teachers have never experienced this before so give the school a chance!

No, it’s not a criticism of the schools. I was just interested. I’m an ex teacher and most of my friends are teachers. I’m 100% in support of you guys xx

It feels like this will be another stick to beat teachers with. All this week parents have emailed demanding work for the children they’ve chosen to keep off. We have been open. It has been a bloody nightmare trying to manage all the cover, keep the kids calm and maintain some semblance of normality. Stroppy parents are the last thing we need right now.

I don’t think posts like this help.

Imo teachers should not have been expected to provide online work for kids whose parents have chosen to keep them off while schools were still open while still having to teach full time.

However, now they are closed (well, apart from for key workers' dc, which may be a lot, going by the government's list of who counts as a key worker), schools should be organising distance learning. I'm not sure how well that will work for primary though - young children are not always able to work independently.

My DC's school closed on Tuesday. Their school had a fully organised virtual school set up by the time they closed. My dc have been doing pretty much a full school day online since Weds (much to their disgust Grin). Thing is, my dh is the Headteacher and is in charge of the virtual school, so they can't get away with shirking!

My grandson has been told to follow the school day while at home so mum has ordered a whiteboard to remind him - he wanted to know when fortnite time was!

The advice to schools is changing daily (or even quicker than that!).
The latest is that Education is suspended. Schools are officially just childcare and safeguarding.

Some schools planned for something else and that has gone out but unlikely to be maintained. Schools can't teach remotely and care for children in school
