By his head teacher this morning
Husband a TA on a permanent contract.

The head teacher can be a bit of a cow to people so he is not sure if she is just being that way as she barked it out at him when he and 2 other TAs asked what the situation was if the schools shut about how it’s bad enough having to pay the teachers
He won’t be able to claim sick pay as he is not sick.

Really worried now

Well if he has a contract with agreed hours he has to get paid

Frenchfancy · 18/03/2020 14:56

Surely it depends how long he has been tnere. More than 2 years and made redundant and he will get something. If not made redundant should be paid.

Is he in a union? If not he needs to join one

Join a union now, before any issues arise. TODAY.

But schools won't get any less money if they close and isn't all their money from the government schools grant anyway? Unless its an academy and I suppose they might have different ways of getting money but I presume they get their money from the government too. Enlighten me if I'm ignorant!

Agree with PP. Go to the GMB website now. If he doesn't like them in the future, he can change, but he really needs some protection ASAP considering there will be an announcement at 5pm.

TBH, anyone working with children or others vulnerable people should be a member of a union - it costs me less than £8 a month.

It’s not holiday (for which TA’s don’t get paid past the initial four week period) so TA’s should still get paid, if a local authority school. There’s another thread somewhere which details the relevant LA documentation. If an academy or private school unfortunately it’s down to their terms of employment.

I am a TA and our head teacher confirmed on Monday that we would be paid if we are forced to close. In addition if we had to self isolate or contracted the virus ourselves she would pay sick leave. We currently do not get paid for the first 2 days sick leave. Definitely speak to the union.
