Made redundant/Job advice?

Was just wondering, i have been made redundant from my job (due to threat of financial loss so they're getting rid of people that are not essential to keeping the business running Sad ) So i'm in a situation where i need to find another job but that is incredibly hard to do given the circumstances in the world right now. I was wondering though, if anyone knows if me applying to work for NHS would be good? Do you think someone like me with no experience with the NHS before would be any help? I'd much rather work for a good cause. I dont even know if they are employing people. Any advice?

I am sorry to hear about your job, that is truly rubbish. You don't say what you do but certainly the NHS and the public sector in general have many many jobs for administrators, cleaners, porters, receptionists, managers, corporate professionals like HR, Finance, IT etc., as well as the obvious nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals. And yes, there are vacancies at the moment (the NHS is a huge employer so while there's an NHS there will always be vacancies Grin ). You can scan www.jobs.nhs.uk to see what there is in your local area - although many roles including cleaning, catering and portering are now outsourced so may not be on there. Bear in mind it isn't always a bed of roses 'working for a good cause' (whether that's in the NHS or for a charity), pay can be poor, conditions can be difficult etc. Also some jobs in the NHS, especially those that offer flexible working can be super-competitive - if you can post a bit more about what your education/qualifications/skills are then posters might be able to advise you better on your chances.

One thing I would recommend if you aren't sure of your next steps and need immediate employment, see if you can sign up to a temp agency and do some temping work as this can be a good opportunity to try out different kinds of job - the NHS does use agency temps in some roles if you are interested, although many trusts also operate an internal 'staff bank' to cover temporary staff shortages, staff sickness (likely to be highly relevant in the coming months) etc., so worth checking this out on your local trust website and see if you can sign up.

Good luck!

Some of the supermarkets are recruiting extra pickers and delivery drivers on temp contracts - that could help tide you over for a while? There are loads of care work vacancies, certainly round here, so that could be worth considering too.
