Dishwasher - Bosch or Miele?

That's it basically Smile. Reviews seem to suggest that both aren't ideal when it comes to loading but both are pretty good on everything else. Thanks.

We have a Bosch at home and it works well and seems to be fairly easy to load. We've had it a few years and it was a replacement for a 2 year old faulty Bosch that they made free of charge as it was just under warranty.
We have a Bosch at work with the cutlery tray and that is a nightmare because tall glasses don't fit on the top shelf and some cutlery doesn't fit properly in the slots.

Thanks very much MrsPnut.

We have a Bosch that works well. Our washing machine is Miele and 6.5 years old now; it has never broken down. My mum's Miele washing machine has been going strong since 1993! So I think Miele products, whilst expensive, are definitely made to last.

I have a Miele and I havent had an issue loading it. The racks are adjustable.

I have also had an LG, Kenwood and a Diplomat (no Bosch though) and i find the Miele far easier to load.

It has the cutlery tray and not the basket which makes a big difference.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/03/2020 11:53

I don't think any of our appliances have broken in 6.5 years and none of them are Miele. That's not a long time is it?

When our dishwasher broke, I got the cheapest Bosch model and it's fine. Not hard to load - dishwashers are fairly standard inside aren't they?

Only downside is that it doesn't have an intensive wash, which I miss because I'm a chuck absolutely anything possible in there kind of person, but I just run a cleaning cycle afterwards using cleaner fluid from Aldi or Wilkos, just the cheap stuff, and that sorts it out.

MonsterMood · 18/03/2020 11:56

MrsPnut I thought my glasses wouldnt fit for months, until I realised I could lower the rack by about an inch by adjusting 2 catches on the tray Blush

TooGood2BeTrue · 18/03/2020 11:56

Well, we had a Hotpoint before and it used to break at least once a year! 27 years for a washing machine is pretty good though, don't you think? Not saying that Bosch products are worse than Miele; I've not had one long enough to compare.

rwalker · 18/03/2020 11:56

tempted for both as cheaper we had one lasted for years

minniemoll · 18/03/2020 11:58

My Bosch dishwasher has been nothing but trouble - the filter failed to stop a label getting to the motor and burning it out (fixed under warranty), and since the warranty expired it's had intermittent faults with error messages, at first they fixed themselves when I waggled the infill and drain pipes about, but now it's not working at all. I'm going to cut my losses and order a cheap one from AO - it'd probably cost me nearly as much to get this one fixed, and I have no faith in it now.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/03/2020 12:01

We had a Hotpoint dishwasher and it lasted about 13 years of near daily use without ever breaking. We still have a Hotpoint fridge freezer that's about 22 years old and counting.

In my experience, appliances have lasted for 10+ years without any sort of fault, and if you get to that age, mostly you decide that it's not worth spending money on the item and might as well get another one as it is likely to be better, more efficient, cheaper than repairing etc.

Have a Miele washer, the best hands down. Saying that I’ve heard a few have had problems with the dishwashers but heard nothing but good about bosch dishwashers. We have a bosch fridge freezer that’s 25 years old. Both good brands

PrincessLouis · 18/03/2020 14:00

Have had both and would choose Bosch hands down

Ventilatorshortage · 18/03/2020 14:01

So many different models and types with both...

We had old old miele, and now have bosh. It's awful. I don't know what we are doing wrong it seems to guzzle salt... Stuff comes out not clear etc

goingtotown · 18/03/2020 14:25

Bosch 100% I’ve had my mine for 6years with no problems.
Pleased with all the cycles especially the 50degree Eco. I use the quick wash for anything that’s not baked on like mugs plates cereal bowls cutlery everything comes out perfect.
It’s so quiet I sometimes think its not working. I use All in One tablets but still fill the rinse aid & keep the salt topped up.

Nat6999 · 18/03/2020 14:31

Bosch, I've had this one 5 years & the one when I was married was 8 years old when I sold the house, never broke down. They aren't that expensive either.

SeriesofUnfortunateEvents · 18/03/2020 14:34

Thanks so much everyone. We've plumped for the Miele.

I’ve got a Miele washing machine and dishwasher. The washing machine is good-only one break down in 7 years and that was my fault.

The dishwasher is only a few months old-great to load up, everything, including the cutlery tray is adjustable. It’s got an autodos system instead of tablets-very good (better for smaller families but not larger ones like mine) but expensive way of running it! I’ll be going back to tablets once my free autodos disks have run out.

My last dishwasher was Miele, (15 years old) I only replaced it because we had the kitchen redone and I went with an integrated one.

fussychica · 18/03/2020 15:34

I've got an integrated slimline Bosch, all I had room for. Touch wood it is probably the best I've had for cleaning quality. My DH is a genius at loading it to get the best from the spaceWink

GiantKitten · 18/03/2020 15:38

I’ve got a dead basic Bosch which is over 11 years old - has no cutlery tray but I find those fiddly anyway.

Works really well.

JanetWeb2812 · 18/03/2020 15:54

Bosch are not the machines they used to be. They still have the Teutonic brand-name but many of their appliances are not actually made in Germany and quality had been compromised to keep prices competive with the likes of Electrolux/AEG.

Miele is, now, a higher quality product (but even they have adjusted) and that is reflected in their prices. If something does go wrong outside the warranty their spares are eye-wateringly expensive.

The secret is to make life as easy as possible for your machine by: not-overloading, scraping food off plates and having regular service washes to keep the gubbins free of gunk.

I'd go for the Miele.

Cruddles · 18/03/2020 16:05

Splashed out on a Miele because of their reputation. Had nothing but problems in the 3 years we had it, warranty was only 2 years. Miele avoided all responsibility on it, it took a an email to the CEO explaining consumer protection act to get a response. Even then it was a heavily discounted price on a replacement machine, so with the out of pocket costs we essentially paid for a second machine in full to replace the faulty first one. Replacement machine has been fine in the 12 months we've had it

Muminabun · 18/03/2020 16:13

Had the same issue and ended up buying a swan. Really happy with it.

Muminabun · 18/03/2020 16:19

I mean a retro swan dishwasher. Comes in loads of colours and I prefer free standing. Not a real swan to do the dishes. I believe in animal rights. 😁

AlessandroVasectomi · 18/03/2020 16:33

Bought our first dishwasher, a Bosch, in 1987. It was retired in 2008 when the kitchen was remodelled and an integrated model replaced it. The original was fine for the first 10 years or so and then odd things went wrong with it , one after another. We had a really good repair man and I’ve lost count of the visits he paid as he always fixed it and it never seemed to cost a great deal. The successor is also a Bosch and it has been no trouble whatsoever. As a previous poster said, it is so quiet in operation that I often forget it’s working.

Being a bloke, reliability is more important to me than loadability or whether it uses a lot of salt or whatever. For that reason, I’d spend the extra on a Miele on grounds of reputation, although I have great faith in Bosch products. We have Bosch for our washing machine, tumble dryer, freezer, fridge, oven, combi microwave, kettle and toaster. With the exception of the washing machine, everything is 10+ years old and has never been any trouble. I also have Bosch power tools, but I won’t digress into that for fear of thread drift...
